Shopping, food, drinks and art! What could go more perfectly together? For the month of July you can enjoy all four at The Galeries!
The Galeries on George Street, Sydney and Art Month Sydney continue their partnership with the launch of their inaugural Emerging Artist Exhibition, which celebrates and supports Australia’s next generation of contemporary art talent.
Jessica Barraket
Following a call-out to artists back in March this year during Art Month Sydney, four very talented artists were named as the finalists to have their works displayed in The Galeries public art space until August 9th 2016. The finalists that were selected to display their art work at the Emerging Artist Exhibition include Brendan Barnacle Duck, Daniel Grosz, Jessica Barraket, and Kai Waskowski.
Daniel Grosz
Earlier this month on July 12th Michelle Newton, deputy director of Artspace Sydney, judged and announced the winner of the Emerging Artist competition. Artist Kai Waskowski was announced as the winner (Congratulations!) and received $4,000 in prize money and the very exciting opportunity to be personally mentored by Art Month Creative Director, Barry Keldoulis.
Kai Wasikowski
For The Galeries Emerging Artist Exhibition Winner Kai Wasikowski employed the optical qualities of lenticular photography to create hyper-coloured 3D photographs of commonplace garden foliage. Positioned somewhere in-between real and rendered space, these highly synthetic depictions of flora present the idea of nature as an inherently subjective and constructed experience. Calling upon the alluring qualities of 3D depth Wasikowski’s work questions the human desire for sensory immersion, particularly in nature’s picturesque, and the subsequent feelings of alterity and loss that precede it.
The public also has the opportunity to vote for their favourite artist out of all four of the finalists, with a People’s Choice prize of $1,000 awarded to the winner. Votes can be cast online at www.thegaleries.com/emerging-artists, or shoppers can vote whilst at The Galeries using their mobile devices to scan a QR code that corresponds with their favourite work. And if you vote for your favourite work of art you will be in the running to win an inspired book collection from Books Kinokuniya hand selected by The Galeries. Voting closes August 2nd 2016 so be sure to get your vote in before then.
