When I first arrived in Sydney, World Bar was my favourite bar, by a long way! Tuesday nights would go off, with tea pots and karaoke galore. It was the venue you’d spend the duration of your night in and holds many memories.
I have to admit, it hasn’t been high on my list of bars to frequent of late! That all changes recently however when I went for a guided tour of the newly refurbished venue. It still has the same soul at heart, just with a little bit more edge!
I was also really pleased when I found out recently that The World Bar is constantly promoting charity and community events to make a positive impact and give a bit back.
Having hosted charity parties like Prowl & bACON for ACON, The World Bar is dedicated to utlilising its enviable Kings Cross and fantastic multi-storey venue to put on some of the best and most entertaining charity and community nights in Sydney.
There’s only one pokie in all of The World Bar; an antique lever-action machine, void of its previous inner workings. This pokie now sits in the beautifully refurbished Apothecary Bar as a permanent collection box for the Wayside Chapel. Every dollar contributed is matched by The World Bar and donated to the charity who provide support, counselling and a safe space for those in need.
For lovers of the arts, The World Bar are currently offering free rehearsal space for acting groups, directors and young creative. The beautifully decorated Tearoom upstairs is currently being turned into a rehearsal space for live music; offering aspiring musicians the chance to practice with full equipment complete with stage, PA and Lighting.
The World Bar has also run their first in bACON for ACON; a charity night aimed at raising funds for LGBTI health advocacy group ACON. The first night, organised with the help of a marketing intern at The World Bar, raised $1095 for ACON and brought some of the fantastic Queer Cabaret back to Kings Cross. The amazing night is set to become a regular monthly event, held at The World Bar’s Friday night party MUM.
January 2015 also saw an incredible Jungle Themed Party Prowl, whose proceeds were all donated to Taronga Zoo. The amazing night raised $1,845 for Taronga Zoo and featured an array of crazy costumes, UV face-paint and a whole lot of animal madness.
They also are advocates of the Sydney Rides Business Challenge, by actively encouraging all staff to ride bicycles to work for each shift.
They have an array of other activations being planned, including another appearance at this year’s City 2 Surf and a block party with Youth Off The Streets.
Whether it’s supporting Sydney’s arts scene, planning a great party, or taking a bet on a charity group through an old pokie machine, The World Bar is more than just a bar, it’s a place for people to come together, socialise and take part in events that help make a difference.
