Naz de Bono, Shelley Craft’s personal trainer and co-founder of new Australian fitness and wellness app, Redux Definition, has put together her top ten tips for staying physically and mentally strong during lockdown.
- Set a routine –just as you normally would and stick to it. Make sure you schedule in movement, hydration and healthy meal prep. This is essential for me to stay happy with my body.
- Listen to your favourite music –when a song comes on that makes you want to get up and move, play it loud, jump around and workout!
- Turn housework into a workout –try to squat, lunge, push and pull purposefully and mindfully with every move you do. You’ll get a great workout without even thinking about it and may even find a new love for vacuuming your house and cleaning that pantry out!
- Stop grazing –I know it’s hard when we are in isolation at home, but stay busy and ensure you eat good dense filling nutrients when you do eat. And, if you are going to hit the chocolate, do 20 press ups first!
- Stay socially connected –we are missing this most of all, but there are heaps of apps out there such as House Party, Zoom and Face Time so use them to connect with friends regularly. Chat and catch up, but maybe try and workout together too – it’s so much fun!
- Try a family workout – your children need physical education too whilst in isolation, so make sure you do their activities and see if they will join you in yours. You will be surprised how much harder your younger self will make you work!
- Get natural light – if you can, get outside for your vitamin D top up as it is so important for our mental health and our emotional wellbeing. And if you can’t get outside, at least sit by a window where you can get some natural light.
- Release emotion – starting to feel a little bit stir crazy? If so, why don’t you take that anger and get rid of it. Pick up a pillow, take yourself off into a quiet room on your own and punch that pillow – several times – however many it takes to make yourself feel calmer. It works, trust me!
- Stretch –try incorporating aworkout into the end of each day that helps to bring your stress levels down, lengthens tight muscles and improves posture. This will help enhance good quality sleep too.
- Meditate –during this time, everybody needs to remember to stop, breathe, connect and reset and I find meditating is great for this. If you are struggling to do this, there are lots of great guided ones on YouTube. Five minutes is all you need too.
