Plant based food has come a long way since I gave up eating meat about 20 years ago! Alibi Bar & Kitchen is Australia’s first 100% plant-based hotel bar and restaurant and recently I got to pop in and try their incredible new Spring menu.

Located in the quirky and modern Ovolo Woolloomooloo, Alibi Bar & Kitchen offers a clean and contemporary menu showcasing local and seasonal produce created by Head Chef Jordan Brogan, in collaboration with Ovolo’s Creative Culinary Partner, US plant-based chef, restauranteur and pioneer Matthew Kenney.

The new spring season menu features locally sourced seasonal produce with Asian and Mediterranean twists. The new menu sees conventional ingredients swapped out for innovate and delicious plant-based alternatives. Designed to share, the curious and contemporary new menu keeps favourites such as, kimchi dumplings, trio of house made cheese and charcoal steamed buns filled with shitake, bok choy, chive and cashew hoisin, on the menu while adding extra seasonal dishes.

We had a very hard time deciding what to order as everything sounded delicious and exciting! We decided to order a mix of favourites and new dishes and a mix of Asian inspired and Mediterranean inspired dishes. To start we shared the Rainbow Chard Pizza with chili, cashew mozzarella, spicy herb oil and shaved macadamia. This pizza is a must-order for pizza and chilli lovers. The base was crispy, the topping was full of flavour and the cheese was so cheesy! Next we had the Kimchi Dumplings with red cabbage puree, coconut coriander wrapper and ginger foam. Not only do these dumplings look beautiful, they taste beautiful too. The kimchi, coconut and ginger taste fantastic together and really excited the taste buds.

For mains we shared the Butternut Squash Gnocchi with Farro Bolognese. The gnocchi pillows had a beautiful Butternut Squash taste and they had a wonderful mouth feel while the Farro Bolognese was super creamy and complimented the gnocchi well. We also had the Charred Broccoli with lime, smoked peanut, satay and coriander. This dish was actually one of my favourite dishes – so full of flavour and so healthy!

We were very glad we had room for dessert as they all sounded absolutely mouth-watering! For dessert we tried the Coconut Cream Pie with macadamia crust and banana and the Ice Cream Sandwich with a chocolate cookie and mint ice cream. Both desserts were so delicious, creamy and absolutely decadent- I can’t believe they were 100% plant-based.

To compliment our meal we indulged in a range of red and white wines from Alibi’s extensive sustainable and biodynamic focused wine list including carbon neutral drops from Ross Hill Wines (Margaret River, WA) and Cullen Wines (Orange, NSW).

Alibi Bar & Kitchen is a delicious, exciting and innovative restaurant that is a must try for those on a plant-based diet and for those who are not equally! Just make sure you go hungry and save room for dessert!
