Popular Sydney CBD Middle Eastern eatery Above Par has undergone a complete refresh for 2021!
Opening the day Covid-19 lock down came into force last year, and subsequently having to slam its doors instantly shut, Above Par has ridden the wave of the global pandemic through one of the hardest years for hospitality. Coming into 2021, as restrictions continue to ease, and the resurgence of the CBD begins, Above Par is looking to the future with several exciting changes and new offerings including upgraded interiors, DJ nights and new menus.
Recently Sydney Social 101 popped into Above Par for a romantic mid-week dinner. A DJ played funky tunes as we enter the restaurant creating a vibrant and relaxed atmosphere. With dining options both outside and inside, we decided to dine in the cosy yet casual indoor dining area. The staff warmly welcomed us and gave us a briefing of the menu before leaving us to make the difficult decision of what to order.
To start we had the insanely delicious house baked golden puffy bread served straight out of the oven. We dipped the bread in the house made baba ganoush made with eggplant cooked on an open fire, tahini, garlic and spices. Next we shared the pan fried haloumi topped with a drizzle of honey, walnuts and currents. This dish is literally cheesy heaven on a plate- a must-try!
We then moved on to our more substantial dishes. There is an abundance of both meaty and vego dishes on the menu which was great for us as I am a vegetarian and my partner loves meat. I chose the melt in your mouth triple cheese (yes, that’s right, three cheeses) Shakshuka which was a beautifully baked eggplant filled with rich tomato and topped with cheese. My partner indulged in the flavour-filled Turkish lamb meatballs served with pita, cacik, sumac onions and pistachio. To share we had the whole roasted cauliflower which was cooked to perfection and served with raisin puree, almonds, warm hummus, zaatar and chilli oil.
By the end of our mains we were beyond stuffed but somehow managed to find room for dessert. We chose the home made walnut baklava served with clotted cream which was the perfect sweet end to a delicious meal. To accompany our baklava we sipped on Turkish coffee and rose tea.
Above Par has a wide selection of wines, cocktails with a Middle Eastern twist and tasty non-alcoholic drinks to accompany your meal. If you are a drinker I would defiantly recommend the Mediterranean Margarita- rosemary infused tequila, cold pressed citrus juice and olives- the perfect refreshing, zesty and boozy cocktail!
Open for dine-in breakfast through to dinner, and late into the night, Above Par has lived up to its name, building a growing fan base for its authentic feasting plates, inspired by traditional Turkish and Levantine influences. Taking inspiration from the streets of Istanbul, at the heart of the all-day Middle Eastern eatery is its authenticity, where you can enjoy your morning coffee before work, a relaxed lunch with co-workers, or late-night dinner over share plates and drinks with friends, before hitting the neighbouring bars.
