Run by Gary Prebble and Chef Brett Jeffery, since 2013, it has been modelled after a traditional Paris bistro, Café Constant, run by Michelin-starred chef, Christian Constant. Set in a modest terrace, Bistro St Jacques offers a nostalgic nod to Parisian café culture of the seventies– old school rustic charm, wooden tables, checkerboard tablecloths, vintage décor, and a bustling ambience.
The food fuses French home cooking with a touch of Parisian flair – comfort food with a sophisticated edge. New Zealand-born Head Chef, Brett Jeffery is classically trained in French culinary techniques,
and works his magic using carefully sourced seasonal produce. Clear, straight-forward flavour combinations with unfussy presentation are paramount at Bistro St Jacques. The new winter menu includes signature dishes like the twice-backed goat’s cheese soufflé with parsley sauce, onion soup slow cooked in red wine and beef stock and seared scallops on mushroom duxelles and gruyere béchamel gratinée. Mains include confit duck leg cassoulet and the wildly popular steak frites, accompanied by a bordelaise sauce of red wine and bone marrow reduction.
Follow the French custom and arrive early for dinner to enjoy l’apéro accompanied by a dainty amuse-bouche. It could be any one of Bistro St Jacques’ elegant cocktails, a Champagne or glass of wine with pâté or freshly shucked oysters. The justly renowned wine list features small producers using organic and biodynamic viticulture from across France and Italy and of course, Australia and New Zealand.
