Banana Blossom is the clever creation of husband and wife super-duo Ben and Nat Thomas. Having worked as a chef in the famous Darley Street Thai and some of Sydney’s most reputable restaurants, Ben has over 20 years experience in perfecting Asian cuisine cooking. Combined with Nat’s Thai background, the first Banana Blossom salad was born in 2003. After taking their creation to the Sydney Good Food Markets, the positive feedback was overwhelming, and the couple realised there was a gap in the market for a healthy on-the-go lunch. Their Asian Deli in Mona Vale soon became a salad-only eatery in 2009, and in 2012 the first Banana Blossom concept store was born in Manly. From a small idea of blending traditional flavours in a single salad to its top-selling menu range today, Banana Blossom’s has come a long way in the last five years.

The idea of Banana Blossom is simple. Using only fresh local ingredients sourced daily, the traditional and authentic flavours from Asia are combined to produce a range of healthy salads. The extensive menu offers a variety of mixed Asian recipes and unique tastes you won’t find anywhere else. Anything from vegetarian Tofu Buddha’s Delight to gluten free options of Satay Noodle Salad, Banana Blossom prides itself on flavours that will satisfy any tastebuds. The Triple Chilli Salad is one of Nat’s traditional family recipes, brought straight from Thailand. Combining spicy chilli chicken breasts with Asian herbs, cucumber, peanuts and deep fried chillies tossed with rice noodles brings a unique exotic flavour with spices of Asia to create a modern twist.

The Tokyo Classic is an all-time favourite and the most popular dish, combining Chinese cabbage, avocado, cucumber, cherry tomato, green tea soba noodles, Asian herbs and Asian salad mix drizzled with a creamy white sesame dressing and black sesame seed. Alongside Chicken and Nashi Pear, Thai Beef and Coconut Chicken, these are only the beginning of the mouth-watering, fresh ingredients and creativity Banana Blossom has to offer.

What separates this store from other salad bars is its pride in using only fresh, local and authentic Asian ingredients to deliver quality traditional salads. “Eating healthy, fresh food from the land is good for your body, mind and soul, so we just make it easier for you,” says Ben. Using only free-range eggs and sourcing premium salad mixes, customers have a peace of mind that each salad is made fresh daily for full flavours with every bite. The top secret dressings are one of the most raved about components of the salads, each created and tailor made to the ingredients of the salad. The ‘Devil Chilli’ spices, exclusive to Banana Blossom, bring a mix of habanero and Thai chillies, marinated in rice vinegar, it is known to cause sweating and is not for the faint-hearted.

Conveniently located in the heart of Bondi, Banana Blossom has been claimed by its customers as the “best post-surf feed”, bringing together local surfers, students, office workers, mums and pensioners and anyone with a love of salad. Its mantra “Eat More Green” is integral to the Banana Blossom philosophy and what it aims to achieve day in, day out.
