Flaming salmon maki rolls, perfectly tangy citrus cocktails and cosy wooden, Japanese inspired interiors make Niji Japanese restaurant in the heart of Double Bay the perfect place to warm up this winter.
Niji is warding off winter chills with its brand new winter menu that promises to set tastebuds ablaze with delicious flavours. The flaming salmon maki roll, a signature dish on the new winter menu, is one dish that is sure to keep you warm as it is literally ignited in front of your very eyes (and mouth!) and then when the flame dies down a warm, scrumptious caramelisation is left on the surface of the salmon encasing the filling. Delicious!
Other appetising items on the menu feature Niji’s signature innovative style with dishes like the ‘Hokkaido Scallops’ with caramelised miso butter, white truffle oil and avocado puree, the ‘Wagyu Beef Cheeks’ with soy dashi glaze, fermented vegetable and fried okra and ‘Tuna Tartare’ with soy truffle dressing and crispy lotus root. Famous for their popcorn prawns (which continues on the new menu), Niji continues to evolve with new dishes such as the ‘Quail Karage’, a bonito flake coated quail marinated in soy and ginger served with Japanese pumpkin puree.
Head chef Shekhar Aryal formerly of Surry Hills’ Toko takes modern innovation to traditional Japanese cuisine, preparing the freshest produce in a way that pushes the boundaries and explores a variety of flavours! Seafood maestro Taiji Mita has recently joined the team from Flying Fish to head the sushi and nigiri bar at Niji which has been a popular attraction since its launch in 2014. Among the signature nigiri sets you will find delicate, melt in your mouth ‘Kingfish with sancho salt and orange honey jelly,’ and ‘Wagyu with caramelised miso butter’.
Niji which means ‘rainbow’ in Japanese was chosen as the name for the restaurant due to the venue’s colourful approach of combining inspiration from izakaya cuisine with eclectic street sake shops in Japan.
Meals are served alongside an extensive beverage list which includes Japanese beers, delicious and refreshing cocktails and multiple different premium sakes for diners to sample. Fast becoming a Double Bay institution for its creative approach, Niji is ideal for a romantic dinner, a lunch with your closest friends and it also caters for functions of all sizes including corporate parties, engagements and birthdays.
Niji is open Tuesday to Sunday for lunch and dinner.
