Newly opened Glebe restaurant and cocktail bar, The Charleston, combines the beautiful colours and flavours of the South Carolina coastline. Located on Glebe Point Road, The Charleston’s charming cottage façade is a clever guise for the playful, South-eastern US state inspired interiors.
The Charleston is a second Inner-west venue from Sydneysiders, Rob Teitzel and Osman Misirlizade, co-owners of The Cottage Bar & Kitchen in Balmain. Enlisting the help of award-winning interior designer, Matt Woods (Beccafico, The Rooftop, Percy Plunkett), the dramatic redesign reflects modern Southern-living, connecting the indoors to the outdoors. Whimsical, dusty pink walls, muted periwinkle seating and exposed brickwork throughout the restaurant are reminiscent of Charleston’s historic waterfront, pastel-coloured homes, whilst a petal-hued marble bar with rose gold accents add an air of modernity and sophistication. A large skydoor cascades natural light throughout the 60-seater venue, setting the scene for casual dining on high-tables. The open-kitchen, terrain scenery and subtle
layers of detail add to the laid-back style, which continues as the bar area spills onto the outdoor front terrace for alfresco dining.
The menu takes inspiration from the shorelines of South Carolina from Coastal Charleston to the Old South Plantations. Designed by Head Chef, Ellena Kim, seafood, barbequed meats and vegetarian dishes on the menu incorporate traditional flavours of the south with fresh, local produce sourced from Sydney’s finest suppliers. Signature dishes include the Lobster Roll with kohlrabi, apple remoulade, house pickle and served in a luxe milk bun, freshly shucked Sydney Rock Oysters and Corn Tortilla Tacos with a choice of fish, pulled pork or cauliflower popcorn fillings. Small and large dishes to share include Baby Octopus with Olives,
Minted Peas Puree, Pea Shoots and Watermelon Radish and BBQ Beef Short Rib served with Sweet Corn and Chimichurri, whilst dessert option Brioche Donuts with Bourbon Glaze satisfies any sweet cravings.
The Charleston’s cocktail menu focuses on playful adaptations of traditional cocktails with ingredients that nod to the venue’s namesake southern-roots, including infused sweet teas, dubbed the ‘Champagne of the south’. Hero summer cocktails include, The Charleston Sling (lemon grass infused gin, rose hip tea, lemon juice, simple syrup), Carolina High Tea (Bulleit rye bourbon, peach liqueur, peach iced tea, lemon juice) and Plantation Negroni (plantation pineapple infused rum, Campari, Rosso Vermouth). The venue has partnered with neighbouring brewery, Young Henry’s, bringing their Natural Larger to the taps and Stayer Mid Strength & Newtowner tinnies to the fridge’s.
