The Sydney Festival is back this year and more accessible than ever! It kicked off yesterday and will continue until the end of January, with an incredible line-up of modern, bold and straight-up fun events and shows. From the Meriton Festival Village set up in the epicentre of Sydney City (Hyde Park) to out West at Crescent Park in Parramatta, the Festival’s spectrum of host locations, and its inclusive program, are sure to entice both new and loyal attendees this summer.

At first glimpse, the monstrous line-up can seem a bit overwhelming, especially to the first-time Sydney Festival goer. But do not be dismayed! Take my advice and start with the free and cheap options, and go from there.

Contrary to popular belief, there is nothing shameful about getting amongst a free event! If you, like me, love a “cheap thrill”, then here are my top picks of the FREE program offerings for this upcoming festival.

Roller Jam – Meriton Festival Village, Hyde Park

Roller-skating, live DJs and an iconic Sydney location – need I say more? Glide in and boogie on down every Saturday afternoon in January with Roller Jam.

The Beach – The Cutaway, Barangaroo Reserve

Release your inner child, and jump, dive or bomb into the biggest ball pit you will ever see. The Beach is a monochromatic installation of 1.1 million recyclable polyethylene balls that creates a reimagined beach experience.

Symphony Under The Stars – The Domain

Picnics and summer go hand-in-hand! So grab your friends, a hamper and a picnic rug, and set up for a night of classical music with Symphony Under The Stars – who return for their final orchestra performances at The Domain in 2017.

DJ Series & Glitterbox – Sky Terrace, The Star

With a panoramic view of the city skyline and Sydney Harbour, the Sky Terrace rooftop bar at The Star, is the perfect venue to host not only the extraordinary line-up of Sydney Festival DJs (CC: DISCO!, Stephen Alkins and Funkdafied, to name a few), but also the new interactive installation Glitterbox. Step inside the mesmerising glowing cube where you can host your own private dance party, whilst being engulfed in glitter!
