There’s a gig on this weekend and I think you should go.
Australia (the band, not the country, not a country band) first come on to my radar in September 2015, at a midnight gig down in the hot and stuffy Tokyo Sing Song underneath The Marlborough Hotel. The finer details of the night are a mere fuzz in my brain but one solid thing stood out; how much fun I had. It was that one overarching feeling towards the three-piece that found me in front of them again at the indie-guitar-gazey-backyard-crickety ‘Bad Day Out’ in January this year, at Petersham bowling club.
And that is what is taking me along to their latest gig, this Saturday (2nd April) at Brighton Up Bar on Oxford Street.
Their pop-rich; rhythm heavy sounds are a result of powerful lyrics by Guy Fenech, which are arranged by the whole band (still not a country band). Synths and on-point producing creates a sound that not only causes the whole room to dance, but awakens the soul. The band’s name is a sweet homage to Oz rock from back in the 80s, and few bands out there can claim.
Their show on Saturday celebrates the release of their debut album ‘Portraits of people places and movies’; an eight-song whopper featuring heavy hitters such as Love is Better and Wake in Fright.
The album is available on limited edition 12″ vinyl (includes digital download) which can be bought on their band camp site here (or I picked up mine at Repressed Records, King Street).
Australia (not the country) will be joined by local indie-punk-shoegazers Yeevs and Sydney indie-rock-babes Phantastic Ferniture. The whole night promises to be a celebration of Sydney’s fantastic local music scene.
Even if you don’t make it down, keep on eye out for Australia. I have a feeling we will be seeing much more of them. And I cannot wait.
