Big Sam Young Just Put Kung Pao Chicken Where You Least Expected It

If Sydney had a sandwich hall of fame, then South Dowling Sandwiches would already have its own wing. But now, it’s gone and recruited one of the city’s biggest food personalities to make an already iconic lunch even harder to resist.

The name is Big Sam Young (whose resume includes Mr. Wong, Ms.G’s, Queen Chow, Totti’s and more). And the gig? Transforming the Darlinghurst institution famed for its supersized sanagas into a destination for what might just be Sydney’s most exciting limited-edition lunch drop this month: a Kung Pao Chicken sandwich that’s available exclusively through DoorDash until 16 July

Sam isn’t exactly known for playing it safe with flavour. If you’ve ever watched one of his videos (or eaten at one of his restaurants), you’ll know he’s built a loyal following around bold, punchy dishes that somehow manage to be comforting and chaotic in the very best way.

So when South Dowling handed him the keys to create one of Sydney’s most beloved sandwiches, he didn’t simply add another layer of cheese and call it innovation.

The sandwich takes everything people love about South Dowling’s famously overstuffed, napkin-required creations and gives it an unmistakably Big Sam twist – layering savoury heat with sweetness, crunch and enough flavour to make your standard chicken schnitty sanga feel a little… underachieving.

For Sam, the inspiration was an easy choice. “Kung Pao Chicken is the most popular dish at my restaurant, and it’s a flavour profile I always come back to,” he says.

“I’m actually more of a rice and noodle guy than a sandwich guy, so taking those flavours and putting them into a South Dowling sandwich was a really fun challenge.”

Translation: You’re not getting some gimmicky influencer collab that’ll disappear from your memory faster than your lunch break.

You’re getting a South Dowling sandwich that just happens to have received the Big Sam treatment.

There’s just one catch. You can’t simply wander in and order one over the counter.

The Kung Pao Chicken sandwich is available exclusively via DoorDash, making it one of those genuinely limited food drops that rewards people who move quickly (or, at the very least, have the app already downloaded).

It’s only around until 16 July, so procrastinators have officially been put on notice.
