We don’t make the rules, we just report the carbs. And, we’re happy to let you know that this weekend, The Shop & Wine Bar in Bondi is ditching its usual beach babe identity to become Bar Gratin – a three-day potato bender courtesy of Potato Utopia. And there’s a free gratin drop involved, so you already know where we’ll be standing.
The main event: Saturday 26th September, 4:30–5:30pm, 100 Absolutely Free Parmesan & Black Pepper Gratins are up for grabs, dripping in The Shop’s famous Bloody Mary sauce with crispy bacon and pickles on the side. That’s an hour-long window and 100 gratins between the whole of Bondi, so this is less “casual stroll down” and more “cancel your other plans, set an alarm, bring your fastest walking shoes.” Once they’re gone, they’re gone. No amount of puppy-dog eyes at the bartender will conjure up a 101st.
Turned up too late and watched someone else walk off with the last one? Grieve accordingly, then order off the Bar Gratin Specials Menu, running Friday 25th to Sunday 27th September, $18 a pop:
- Parmesan & Black Pepper Gratin – on a skewer with black pepper parmesan, Bloody Mary sauce, pickle and crispy bacon, because apparently gratins can be finger food now
- Mozzarella & Hot Honey Gratin – a glow-up of The Shop’s hot halloumi, finished with hazelnuts and thyme for anyone who wants to feel vaguely sophisticated while eating fried potato with their hands
Basically: three days, one venue, zero chill, all carbs. Bring your appetite and your competitive streak — we hear the queue moves fast.
