I have a confession to make: choosing a new perfume is one of those beauty decisions I find surprisingly difficult. You can read all the fragrance notes in the world, but until you actually spray it on your skin, you never really know whether you’re going to love it or smell like you’ve accidentally walked through the perfume department wearing every tester at once.
That’s why Àerre’s Full Perfume Discovery Set caught my attention.
Rather than committing to one full sized bottle, the set lets you try 15 different 2ml fragrances for $79, giving you the chance to properly road test a whole wardrobe of scents before deciding which ones deserve a bigger bottle. The fragrances are unisex and made in France, with a 20 per cent concentration, and are vegan and cruelty free.
And this isn’t a collection of 15 fragrances that all smell vaguely the same. The set takes you through some very different fragrance personalities, with scents inspired by some seriously recognisable perfumes.
There’s Black Blaze, inspired by Creed’s Aventus, Joshua Tree inspired by Le Labo’s Santal 33 and New York Skyline inspired by Chanel’s Bleu de Chanel. If you prefer something sweeter and more floral, Summer Reverie takes inspiration from Viktor&Rolf’s Flowerbomb, while Sunset in Paris is inspired by Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle.
Then there are the warmer, richer options. Amber Haze draws inspiration from Tom Ford’s Tobacco Vanille, Forest Spice from Tom Ford’s Oud Wood and Honey Orchid from Kayali’s Vanilla 28. Midnight Whisper is Àerre’s take on the style of Armani’s Sì, while Wildfire is inspired by Dior’s Sauvage.
The final five scents really round out the fragrance wardrobe. After Hours is inspired by YSL’s Black Opium, Bliss Release by MFK’s Baccarat Rouge 540, Deep Blue by YSL’s Libre, Golden Hour by Dior’s J’Adore and Lucid Dreaming by Louis Vuitton’s Imagination.
For me, the real appeal of a discovery set like this is that it turns choosing a perfume into a bit of an experiment. Instead of spraying something once in a shop and making a snap decision, you can wear the fragrances on different days, see how they develop and work out which ones actually fit your personality and wardrobe.
It also makes a pretty good option if you’re someone who likes having different fragrances for different moods. You might want something fresh and easy for the morning, something floral for a lunch date and something warmer and more dramatic for going out. Having 15 little bottles means you can mix things up rather than committing to one signature scent.
Àerre fragrances use ingredients sourced from Grasse, widely recognised as a major centre of the perfume industry, and the brand’s products are free from colourants, UV filters, parabens and phthalates.
At $79, the Full Perfume Discovery Set is also a much less intimidating way to explore the brand than buying multiple full sized bottles. And once you find a favourite, Àerre offers full sized fragrances separately, with its current range starting from around $29.25 depending on the scent.
My favourite thing about the set? There’s no pressure to decide immediately. Perfume is incredibly personal, so having 15 scents to play around with feels a lot more fun than trying to guess your perfect fragrance from a description.
Basically, if your current perfume collection consists of one bottle you wear constantly and another three you bought because they smelled amazing on someone else, this could be the intervention you need.
