If your For You Page has been serving you Erewhon smoothies on repeat, you already know the drill: a grocery store in LA, a very photogenic cup, a celebrity fan (ahem Ms Bieber) and a price tag that makes it a personality. Sydney now has its own answer, and it’s in Double Bay.
Super Mercato has just opened in the Cosmo Shopping Centre on Knox Street. It’s a Mediterranean superfood grocer that is part market, part deli and part curated pantry, and it comes with a smoothie that’s already doing numbers on camera.
Let’s start with the smoothies
Super Mercartos smoothies are the main event. Pink, red and cream swirls, stacked in a cup that was clearly designed with your camera roll in mind.
They’re made fresh daily at the Eat-Now deli counter, alongside juices and yoghurt, so you’re not grabbing something that’s been sitting in a fridge since Tuesday. Think Erewhon energy, but you can walk there from the Double Bay ferry wharf and then do your grocery shop. Smoothie-and-grocery-shop is officially a Sydney lunch plan.
So what actually is Super Mercato?
Think of it as a grocery store where someone has already done the homework for you. The brains behind it have one rule: if they can’t explain in one sentence why a product deserves a spot on the shelf, it doesn’t get one.
As co-founder James Simonetta puts it: “You shouldn’t have to be a nutritionist to shop well. Our job is to do the work for you, to find the better version, whether that’s a better ingredient list, a better fat, a local maker or simply a better taste.”
In practice, that means shelf markers tell you why each product made the cut, so you don’t have to squint at the back of a packet. Look out for:
- Supermercato Pick
- High Protein
- High Fibre
- Better Fats
- Low Sugar
- Simple Ingredients
- Local Maker
- Small Batch
- Organic
There are also digital displays, so you can tap your phone to a product and see its calorie count, nutrition panel and the story behind the brand.
What’s else is on offer
Market Fresh: the produce section, with specialty and Australian-grown fruit and veg that’s a step above your standard supermarket aisle.
The curated pantry: simple, recognisable ingredients, better fats and no palm oil. It’s the kind of shelf where you can actually pronounce everything.
Eat-Now deli: panini, salads, juices, smoothies and yoghurt, all made daily. The artisan paninis start from 588 calories, so you know exactly what you’re getting.
Prepared meals and proper treats: because dinner shouldn’t always be a project, and sometimes you just want a treat.
No, it’s not a “wellness” shop (Thank God)
Superfood grocer doesn’t mean you’ll be side-eyed for buying butter. Sugar, butter, chocolate and flour are all welcome, as long as they’re made with real ingredients and no cheap industrial shortcuts. It’s Mediterranean eating at its core: fresh, generous, balanced and full of flavour.
Want the perks?
Super Mercato has a membership from $14 a month. It gets you member pricing across the range, queue-skip priority, enhanced delivery and preferred delivery windows. Home delivery is available across the full range, so your smoothie-adjacent lifestyle can continue from the couch.
