Button batteries may be tiny, but they pose one of the biggest hidden safety risks in the home. Found in everything from car key fobs and TV remotes to toys, bathroom scales and tracking tags, these coin-sized powerhouses have become a household staple. Now, Energizer has unveiled a world-first innovation designed to make them significantly safer for families.
The new Energizer Ultimate Child Shield coin lithium batteries, available in 2032, 2025 and 2016 sizes, are the world’s only coin lithium batteries that prevent ingestion burns if swallowed. After years of research and development, the breakthrough technology has been designed to eliminate the dangerous chemical reaction that can occur when a button battery becomes lodged inside a child’s body.
The launch comes at an important time, with an estimated 20 Australian children presenting to hospital emergency departments every week after suspected coin lithium battery ingestion or insertion. Because a 20mm coin battery is similar in size to a young child’s oesophagus, it can easily become stuck, with tissue damage beginning in as little as 15 minutes.
While no safety feature replaces adult supervision, the new batteries add several layers of protection to help reduce the risk. Along with the new ingestion burn prevention technology, the batteries feature a proprietary titanium alloy that stops the chemical reaction responsible for burns before it starts. They also include a non-toxic bitter coating designed to discourage children from swallowing them, and Energizer’s exclusive Colour Alert Technology, which turns a child’s mouth blue if the battery comes into contact with saliva, helping alert caregivers that immediate medical attention may be needed.
The batteries are also sold in child-resistant packaging, another important safeguard that helps prevent young children from accessing them before they’re ever used.
Of course, battery safety doesn’t stop after purchase. Parents and caregivers are still encouraged to keep both new and used batteries locked away and out of sight, while used batteries should be taped on both sides and recycled or disposed of promptly in a location that children can’t access.
As more everyday products rely on coin lithium batteries, innovations like Energizer Ultimate Child Shield offer welcome peace of mind. While safe storage and proper disposal remain essential, this new technology represents a significant step forward in helping protect curious little hands and reducing the risks associated with button battery accidents.
