Winter had hit and I’m not quite ready to swap my sneakers for bulky boots. Australia’s winters are generally mild enough to get away with casual shoes, especially when paired with your favourite jeans, wide-leg pants or cosy knitwear. The key is finding shoes that are comfortable, versatile and stylish enough to wear from weekend brunches to casual Friday at work.
After years of rotating through countless pairs, these are the three casual shoes I keep reaching for every winter.
1. Vans Authentic Red — The Ultimate Winter Pop of Colour
If there was ever a shoe that proves basics don’t have to be boring, it’s the Vans Authentic in bright red.
Originally introduced in 1966, the Vans Authentic has remained one of the most iconic casual sneakers on the planet thanks to its simple silhouette, durable canvas upper and signature waffle sole. Its clean design has barely changed in decades, which says a lot about how timeless it is.
While black, white and checkerboard versions are classics, the red colourway is my personal favourite for winter. When the season’s wardrobe tends to lean heavily into blacks, greys, denim and neutral knits, these shoes add an instant burst of personality without feeling over the top.
I love wearing them with straight-leg jeans, oversized jumpers and long wool coats. They’re comfortable enough for everyday wear and seem to get better once they’re properly broken in — something many Vans fans agree on.
Why I love them:
- Instantly brightens winter outfits
- Classic design that never dates
- Lightweight and comfortable
- Works with everything from denim to tailored trousers
2. Converse Chuck Taylor All Star — The Timeless Classic
Converse Chuck Taylor All Star
There are very few shoes that have stood the test of time quite like the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star.
Whether you choose the high-top or low-top version, Chuck Taylors have an effortless cool factor that works year-round. During winter, I particularly love the high-tops paired with cropped jeans, chunky socks and oversized knitwear.
They’re the kind of shoe that somehow looks better the more lived-in they become. Plus, they transition seamlessly from casual coffee runs to pub catch-ups and weekend markets.
Why I love them:
- Iconic design
- Great with jeans and knitwear
- Available in endless colours
- Easy to dress up or down
3. Adidas Samba OG — The Trend That Earned Its Place
Some trends come and go. The Adidas Samba isn’t one of them.
Originally designed as an indoor football shoe, the Samba has become one of the biggest sneaker success stories in recent years. The slim profile, leather upper and gum sole make it feel a little more elevated than a traditional canvas sneaker, which is why it’s become a staple in so many wardrobes.
For winter, the leather construction is a bonus, offering a little more protection from chilly mornings than canvas styles. I find they look particularly good with wide-leg trousers, trench coats and relaxed tailoring.
Why I love them:
- Sleek, versatile silhouette
- Leather upper feels more winter-friendly
- Works with casual and smart-casual outfits
- Fashion-forward without being flashy
