Inspired by the neon-lit streets of Hong Kong, Surry Hills iconic Evening Star Hotel has relaunched after months of renovations to reveal Gweilo with an all-star cast at the helm. The newest Marvan Hotel gem has been brought to life by former China Doll and Merivale’s EST chef, Seb Gee; Smoking Panda mixologist, Iain Guthrie; and award-winning hospitality designer Paul Kelly.
Once home to a pool game between Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl, The Evening Star now offers a glimpse into the year 2049 with the futuristic Gweilo in a complete transformation of the venue. Meaning “foreign devil” or “ghost man”, Gweilo is a common Cantonese slang for Westerners – a concept that is evident when peering at the menu. Gee delivers contemporary Pan Asian street food and share plates with an unexpected western twist. Think wagyu beef and carrot ribbons drowning in Tooheys New rendang, or spring rolls bursting with pumpkin, truffle and mushrooms, served with a roast eshallot nuoc cham. Gee was inspired by his travels throughout Asia, particularly China and south east Asia when creating Gweilo’s menu.
Gweilo’s afterwork drink game is strong, bringing a theatrical cocktail list to the table. Opt for the refreshing Gwei Sloe with Sloe gin, prosecco, lychee and rhubarb bitters, or the showstopping Hadouken complete with Roku gin, rosemary Aperol, grapefruit, yuzu and Absinthe flame lit at the table in front of you. The bar also offers a comprehensive list of Australian and international wines, beers and liquor.
Designed by Paul Kelly, Gweilo features blended classic architecture with retro-futuristic styling. The bar and the beautifully printed tile mural backdrop take center stage in the space. Dramatic arches form individual cozy sections, perfect for lounging the afternoon away.
Gweilo’s previous moniker, the Evening Star Hotel, tapped its very first keg in 1873. Thanks to its general air of seediness, the hotel was affectionately nicknamed the Evil Star (aided by the presence of drinking journalists). After a huge renovation, the seediness is gone, the journos have remained, and the venue has kept a cheeky little evil devilishness with its new brand logo and name.
Grab your chopsticks and friends, raise your glass and settle in for a night of fun.
