I Climbed The Sydney Harbour Bridge With My Son During Vivid! It’s A Memory We’ll Keep Forever

There are some Sydney experiences that sit on your bucket list for years.

And then there are those rare experiences that completely exceed every expectation you had of them.

Last night, my son Albie and I climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge during Vivid Sydney, and I’m not exaggerating when I say it was one of the most special experiences we’ve ever shared together.

As a mum, I’m always looking for experiences rather than things. Moments that create memories. Stories we’ll tell years from now.

This was one of those moments.

Watching Sydney transform into a sea of colour beneath us, seeing the Opera House illuminated in the distance, spotting the Vivid installations from above and hearing Albie’s excitement every few minutes as he discovered something new was genuinely magical.

For a little while, it felt like the rest of the world disappeared.

It was just us, standing above one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

And it reminded me that sometimes the best adventures are the ones sitting right on our doorstep.

A New Way To Experience A Sydney Icon

What made the experience even more special was learning that BridgeClimb Sydney has just opened the all-new BridgeMuseum inside the Sydney Harbour Bridge’s original South-East Pylon.

Officially opening this week, the BridgeMuseum offers visitors a completely new way to experience one of Australia’s most recognisable landmarks.

While the BridgeClimb gives you the thrill, perspective and breathtaking views, the BridgeMuseum allows visitors to step inside the structure itself and discover the stories behind the steel.

Through immersive exhibits, historical artefacts, interactive displays and multimedia storytelling, the experience explores the Bridge’s incredible construction, cultural significance and the people who helped bring it to life.

The Stories Hidden Inside The Bridge

One of the things I love most about Sydney is that every landmark has layers of stories hidden beneath the surface.

The BridgeMuseum reveals plenty of them.

Visitors can learn about the Bridge’s construction during the 1920s and 1930s, explore its role in shaping modern Sydney and uncover some lesser-known chapters from its history.

Did you know the South-East Pylon once served as a WWII military lookout?

Or that it has housed a post office over the years?

Or even a family of white cats?

It’s these quirky details that make history feel human and relatable.

The museum also incorporates First Nations perspectives developed in collaboration with Indigenous design agency Balarinji, helping visitors connect with the history of the harbour and Gadigal Country long before the Bridge became part of Sydney’s skyline.

More Than Just A Tourist Attraction

It’s easy to assume attractions like this are designed for tourists.

But honestly, I think locals may appreciate it even more.

We become so familiar with the Harbour Bridge that we stop really seeing it.

The BridgeMuseum offers an opportunity to rediscover one of Sydney’s most iconic landmarks and develop a deeper appreciation for the engineering, innovation and cultural significance that have made it such an enduring symbol of Australia.

Whether you’re visiting Sydney for the first time or have lived here your entire life, there’s something incredibly special about learning the stories behind a place you thought you already knew.

A Memory We’ll Treasure Forever

As we climbed down from the summit last night, Albie was already talking about telling his friends at school.

I was quietly doing what mums do — mentally filing away another memory I’ll hold onto forever.

Because while the views were spectacular and Vivid was stunning, what I’ll remember most is sharing the experience together.

If you’re looking for a family activity these school holidays, a unique Sydney adventure, or simply a reason to see the city through fresh eyes, I’d highly recommend adding both the BridgeClimb and the new BridgeMuseum to your list.

Trust me.
