ICYMI: Tokyo Lamington Is Taking Over Every Yo-Chi In The Country

Somewhere in Newtown, a very good idea has finally seen the light of day. After four years of gentle (or possibly relentless) persuasion, Yo-Chi has convinced cult bakery Tokyo Lamington to bring its famously good lamingtons out of its two shopfronts and into all 76 Yo-Chi venues around the country.

The Century-Old Cake Clash Just Got A New Chapter

Tim Tams, Fantales, and Lamingtons. While all are iconic Aussie eats, only the latter is the subject of a national identity crisis – with Queensland and Victoria having been at war for over a hundred years over who actually invented the thing, And, nobody’s backing down anytime soon.

So really, the only sensible next step was to hand the whole mess over to two of the country’s most fanatically-followed dessert brands and see what happens when you dump it in a bowl of frozen yoghurt. Democracy in action.

From 18 August, Tokyo Lamington’s mini lamingtons show up as toppings across every single Yo-Chi in the country, in two flavours made exclusively for this collab: the OG (chocolate, coconut, an absolute unit, no notes) and a proudly left-field Yuzu, for anyone who decided regular coconut just wasn’t cutting it anymore.

What’s Actually Landing In Your Bowl

This isn’t a “here’s a sprinkle on top and call it a day” situation. The full lineup includes:

  • Mini OG Lamingtons – chocolate, coconut, the classic, done with the respect it deserves
  • Mini Yuzu Lamingtons – yuzu and coconut, for dessert with a bit of an identity crisis and zero interest in apologising for it
  • A brand-new vegan swirl – fan-favourite Choccy meets a brand-new Coconut Raspberry, pull them together from the centre handle and watch them merge into a genuine lamington flavour, like some kind of dessert science experiment
  • Lamington Sauce – chocolate, coconut and berry jam, because subtlety was never the goal here

Four Years in the Making

Yo-Chi co-owner and Chief Brand Officer Oliver Allis has apparently been chasing this since 2022, which in food-collab years equuates to roughly a half century of persistence.

“This one’s been a long time coming so it was never going to be a quick topping collab for us,” Allis said. “We wanted to build something bigger, and give Tokyo Lamington a platform that matches how good their stuff actually is. If we’ve done it right, this won’t feel like a product drop – it’ll feel like two things people already love colliding.”

Shrinking a lamington down to topping-size, it turns out, is a genuinely fiddly business. Tokyo Lamington co-founder Min Chai admits it took months to nail. “The ratio of sponge and coconut completely changes when you shrink it down. It took months of testing to get the bite right. These are still very much Tokyo Lamington, just tiny.”

Blame The Trend, Honestly

This collab is riding the wave of a very specific, very unstoppable phenomenon currently rewriting menus across the country: Japanese-Australian flavour mashups. Matcha tiramisu, carbonara udon, and now a lamington that’s decided to go full identity crisis with a yuzu twist.

Tokyo Lamington co-founder Eddie Stewart says a few years ago, this pairing would’ve had people raising eyebrows. “We’re seeing people get a lot more adventurous with what ‘Australian food’ even means,” he said. “A few years ago pairing Japanese flavours with something as classic as a lamington would’ve seemed strange. Now it just makes sense to people.”

It’s also the biggest spotlight Tokyo Lamington has had since Eddie and Min started the bakery almost as a joke between mates – and it has since snowballed into a genuine cult favourite across Sydney and Melbourne, about to be within arm’s reach of basically everyone in between.

And Because Fair’s Fair

Tokyo Lamington will be returning the favour, stocking a full-size Yo-Chi lamington in its Newtown and Carlton bakeries for the same limited run. A proper two-way crossover, not just Yo-Chi raiding the cool kids’ lunchbox.

The Fine Print

The Yo-Chi x Tokyo Lamington Takeover launches 18 August across all Yo-Chi venues nationwide, for a limited time only and subject to availability. Given the cult following behind both brands, queues are basically guaranteed from day one. Get in early – once it’s gone, it’s gone, and nobody wants to be the person who missed it.
