Market City Is Giving Away Free Mooncakes This Weekend … Here’s How to Get Yours

If you’ve been anywhere near Haymarket this September, you’ve probably already caught wind of the lantern glow and the sweet smell of pastry drifting through Market City. That’s because the centre is in full swing for Mid-Autumn Festival, and it’s going all out with 3,500 free mooncakes, a swag of in-centre activations, and one of the biggest celebrations on the Asian cultural calendar.

Here’s everything you need to know before the festivities wrap up this weekend on 28 September.

The Mooncake Giveaway

The headline act is simple: free mooncakes, no strings attached (well, almost). This weekend, Market City is handing out pastries to anyone who spends $20 or more at any Market City store, or $40 or more at Thai Kee IGA. With 3,500 mooncakes up for grabs across the month, this is the perfect excuse to knock over your grocery run, grab a new outfit, or treat yourself to lunch – and walk away with a little taste of tradition on top.

Pro tip: mooncakes are famously rich and only made once a year for this occasion, so if you’ve never tried one, this is about as low-effort a way as you’ll find to tick it off the list.

A Whole Festival Built Around It

The giveaway is just the entry point – Market City has transformed itself into a proper Mid-Autumn destination for the month.

Dine under the lanterns. Head up to Level 3’s 1909 Dining Precinct, where nine Asian restaurants are serving up lunch and dinner beneath glowing lantern installations. It’s the kind of atmosphere that makes an ordinary Wednesday dinner feel like an occasion – and if you’re dining after 6pm, parking is on the house.

Try your luck at the claw machine. A Mid-Autumn-themed claw machine has taken up residence on Level 1, loaded with vouchers and mooncake prizes for anyone keen to test their reflexes.

Get a keepsake made by hand. Calligraphy artist Madam Tot is at Market City through to 27 September, hand-painting personalised pieces for shoppers wanting something a little more meaningful to mark the occasion than a receipt.

Why It Matters

Mid-Autumn Festival – or Moon Festival – falls on 25 September this year, and it’s one of the most significant dates on the calendar for Asian communities across Sydney. Traditionally tied to the Autumn harvest, it’s a time for gathering with family, sharing food, and expressing gratitude – usually with mooncakes taking pride of place on the table, symbolising unity and togetherness under the year’s fullest moon.

Market City’s month-long celebration is a nod to that spirit, turning the centre into a gathering point for the community well beyond the day itself – whether that’s through a shared meal at the dining precinct, a spontaneous game at the claw machine, or a mooncake picked up on the way home from the shops.
