Most businesses mark their first year in business with a candle shoved in a muffin. Cult Wareemba bakery Martha’s celebrated 365-days of Middle Eastern-inspired viennoiseries and signature drinks by taking its most famous pastry and making it enormous.
In 12 months, the bakery has moved over 17,000 cinnamon scrolls, which isn’t “having a good year” so much as “quietly running a small cinnamon-based empire.” And, so for the anniversary, Martha’s has done the only logical thing: scaled the scroll that started it all up into a full-blown cake.
Aptly termed the Giant Cinnamon Scroll Cake, this breakfast-office snack-dessert hybrid is built on Martha’s signature pastry dough, layered with cardamom and cinnamon, and finished with a fragrant orange blossom icing – the bakery’s Mediterranean-leaning signature move. It also comes with a generous pour of extra icing on the side, to be warmed and drizzled over just before serving. Interactive dessert, or a polite way of admitting no amount of icing on top will ever be enough? We’re not going to be the ones to ask.
Owner Paris Nassif wanted the anniversary to feel unmistakably Martha’s: nostalgic, generous, a little unexpected. Fair to say a cake-sized cinnamon scroll ticks all three.
The details:
- Martha’s Giant Cinnamon Scroll Cake, $60
- Pre-orders open 15 September, launching 23 September
- Sydney-wide delivery via Send a Sweet, or order direct through Martha’s
One cake, one very good year, and approximately zero chance it survives past morning tea. Move fast – anniversary specials have a habit of vanishing well before the icing does.
