Review: Pay No Attention is the school holiday show that had our whole family mesmerised

Finding a show that genuinely entertains both kids and adults can be a challenge, but Pay No Attention at the Sydney Opera House absolutely delivers.

From the moment the lights dimmed, we were completely hooked. Performed by the incredibly talented young artists of the Flying Fruit Fly Circus, this isn’t your traditional circus filled with animals and ringmasters. Instead, it’s a clever, high-energy spectacle that blends breathtaking acrobatics, laugh-out-loud comedy, and storytelling into one unforgettable hour.

The first thing that struck me was just how talented these young performers are. It’s hard to believe you’re watching teenagers as they fly through the air, balance impossibly high, tumble across the stage and execute routines with incredible precision. Every act feels polished, fearless and genuinely exciting.

What I loved most, though, was that Pay No Attention offers much more than spectacular circus tricks. Beneath the flips, aerials and comedy is a surprisingly thoughtful story about identity, truth and growing up in a world full of social media, fake news and constant information overload. It sounds like a big topic, but it’s explored in such a fun and imaginative way that children can enjoy the adventure while adults appreciate the deeper message.

Visually, it’s a feast. Colourful costumes, clever lighting and theatrical illusions keep you guessing throughout, while the fast-paced performance means there’s never a dull moment. Just when you think you’ve figured out what’s happening, another surprise arrives.

The show’s 60-minute running time also feels just right for families. It moves at a brisk pace, keeping younger audience members engaged from beginning to end without ever feeling rushed.

Watching these young performers command the stage with such confidence is genuinely inspiring. Their athleticism is extraordinary, but it’s their energy, teamwork and obvious love of performing that really shines through.

Whether your family already loves circus performances or you’re simply looking for something a little different these school holidays, Pay No Attention is well worth seeing. It’s funny, exciting, thought-provoking and packed with moments that will leave you wondering, “How did they do that?”

It’s one of those rare family shows that entertains every generation equally. We walked out smiling, still talking about our favourite acts, and already recommending it to friends. If you’re after a memorable school holiday experience, this is one performance that’s impossible to ignore.
