Six School Holiday Ideas That Are Definitely Better Than Being Glued to an iPad

The school holidays have officially arrived, which means Sydney parents are once again faced with the same impossible question: how do you keep the kids entertained without spending a fortune – or resorting to unlimited screen time?

Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to fill a day that don’t involve another episode on YouTube. Whether you’ve got a budding artist, a future game designer, a mini explorer or simply a kid with energy to burn, these school holiday activities are guaranteed to beat another afternoon on the couch.

Check Into a Hotel Where the Kids Are Basically VIPs

If you’ve ever wished someone else could take over planning family activities for a day or two, Hyatt Regency Sydney has the answer.

Running every NSW school holidays, the hotel’s much-loved Kids Concierge service is designed to make family staycations feel genuinely relaxing. Think kid-sized robes and slippers waiting in the room (adorable), personalised activity itineraries, complimentary treats, activity packs and curated guides to all the best family attractions around Darling Harbour.

And speaking of Darling Harbour, you’re perfectly positioned for easy adventures at Sea Life Sydney Aquarium, Tumbalong Park and the Australian National Maritime Museum without spending half the day in the car asking, “Are we there yet?”

Parents will also appreciate the dining perks. Kids aged five and under enjoy complimentary breakfast, children aged six to 12 receive half-price breakfast, and from midday, kids eat free at selected hotel restaurants when dining alongside a paying adult.

It’s basically a staycation where someone has already thought about all the little things – so you don’t have to.

Let Them Design Australia’s Next Yo-Chi Cup (While You Eat Frozen Yoghurt)

If your fridge is already covered in your child’s artwork, why not aim a little higher?

Yo-Chi’s hugely popular Colour Our Cup competition is back – and this year it’s bigger than ever.

Kids (and creative grown-ups, let’s be honest) can collect a colouring sheet from their local Yo-Chi store, transform it into their masterpiece and submit it for the chance to win part of a massive $60,000 prize pool.

Even cooler? One national winner will see their artwork printed on limited-edition Yo-Chi cups rolling out across all 74 Australian stores in 2027.

This year’s competition also introduces community gallery spaces, where shortlisted entries will be displayed in selected stores before locals vote for their favourites.

It’s wholesome, creative and gives everyone an excellent excuse to order a frozen yoghurt loaded with far too many toppings. That’s what we call productive school holiday planning.

Entries close on 14 July, so don’t leave the colouring pencils buried at the bottom of the craft cupboard.

Turn Screen Time Into Something They’ll Actually Learn From

Let’s be honest: convincing kids to ditch screens entirely can feel like negotiating an international peace treaty.

Code Camp has found the sweet spot by turning that screen obsession into something genuinely creative.

Designed for kids aged five to 13, the popular holiday program lets children build video games, create animations, design Roblox worlds, produce YouTube videos, experiment with robotics and even learn coding skills they’ll proudly show off long after the holidays finish.

First-time coders can ease in with beginner-friendly programs, while returning campers can dive into more advanced favourites like Roblox Studio Designers, where kids learn how games are actually built using Roblox Studio and Lua coding.

Future YouTubers can explore filming, editing and storytelling in a safe, guided environment, while Minecraft fans can flex their creativity in dedicated engineering workshops.

Not every activity involves a keyboard, either. Get Crafty! swaps technology altogether for hands-on creative projects that encourage collaboration, imagination and making something they can actually take home.

Who knew screen time could become resume-building?

Spend the Night With Nature’s Creepiest Creatures

If your kids are fascinated by creepy crawlies, vampires or anything vaguely disgusting (which, statistically speaking, they probably are), this city staycation delivers equal parts thrills and education.

Pullman Sydney Hyde Park has partnered with the Australian Museum to create an accommodation package centred around the wildly fascinating Bloodsuckers: Nature’s Vampires exhibition.

The immersive exhibition explores some of nature’s most infamous blood-feeding creatures, from mosquitoes to vampire bats, while explaining the surprising role they play in science, medicine and ecosystems around the world.

The family package includes overnight accommodation, buffet breakfast, exhibition tickets and a kids’ activity pack, making it an easy way to combine sightseeing with a memorable city escape.

Better yet, the hotel sits just across from Hyde Park and only moments from the Australian Museum, so you won’t need to navigate Sydney traffic with restless backseat passengers asking how much longer.

Packages start from $399 and are available until 11 October, making it a fun option whether you’re visiting Sydney or simply pretending you’re on holiday without ever leaving town.

Meet Woolly Mammoths (Without Building a Time Machine)

Sure, dinosaurs get all the glory, but the Ice Age crew deserves their moment too. This winter, Sydney Zoo is transforming into a frozen prehistoric playground with Creatures of the Ice Age, where life-sized Woolly Mammoths, Sabre-Tooth Tigers, Dire Wolves and other ancient giants take over the grounds.

Kids can wander the immersive trail, duck into a snow-filled play dome, bring their own prehistoric artwork to life through an augmented reality colouring experience, and even catch surprise flurries from snow machines along the way. Running until August 16, the experience is free with zoo entry, making it an easy school holiday win that combines wildlife, play and just enough educational stealth to keep everyone happy.

Send Them on a Coffee Treasure Hunt (They Work. You Reap The Rewards)

Finally, If your teenager suddenly volunteers to come with you on your morning coffee run, don’t ask questions – just roll with it.

For one week only, Stanley 1913 is turning Sydney’s cafe scene into a city-wide treasure hunt, with more than 400 reusable coffee cups hidden in plain sight.

Here’s how it works: every morning from 13-17 July, Stanley 1913 will reveal a secret coffee order and the cafe serving it via its Instagram. Head to the nominated cafe, order the exact drink, and if you’re quick enough, your coffee won’t arrive in a takeaway cup – it’ll be served in a Stanley 1913 travel mug that’s yours to keep.

Twenty reusable cups are up for grabs at each participating café, so speed definitely helps.

Sydney cafes joining the hunt include Single O, Five Senses, Cherry’s Goods, Kaska Eatery, Up South Bondi and Axil Coffee Roasters, giving coffee lovers plenty of excuses to explore a few new local favourites along the way.

It’s part scavenger hunt, part caffeine fix and, if luck’s on your side, a pretty great excuse to upgrade your daily coffee cup.
