If you’ve ever complained about your mattress not being firm enough, here’s a bit of perspective — and an invitation to make a difference. On Friday 24 October, Sydneysiders are invited to swap their beds for sleeping bags at Sleep Under the Stars, a one-night-only charity camp-out at Barangaroo’s Stargazer Lawn that’s as photogenic as it is purposeful.
This isn’t your average sleepover. Think live music, storytelling, games, shelter-building, and stargazing under the Sydney skyline — all while helping to raise $1 million for Stepping Stone House, a local charity providing safe homes, education and life-changing support for young people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
It’s completely free to attend — and open to everyone. Families, friends, and work teams are encouraged to roll out a swag or sleeping bag, connect under the night sky, and reflect on what “home” really means.
The Hidden Crisis Behind the Cause
Sydney might be one of the world’s most liveable cities, but it’s hiding a serious problem: half of the city’s homeless population is under 24.
Many young people aren’t rough sleeping — they’re couch surfing, living in cars, or bouncing between short-term stays. In other words, they’re invisible.
According to Stepping Stone House CEO Jason Juretic, “People don’t always associate couch surfing with homelessness, but that’s exactly what it is. Just because it isn’t happening on the street doesn’t make it any less devastating.”
The numbers are sobering: in NSW, 49% of people supported by homelessness services are under 24, and 65% are women. Even more confronting — one in three are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander young people.
A Night That Changes Lives
Since 1989, Stepping Stone House has helped over 500 young people rebuild their lives with safe accommodation, education pathways, and the confidence to live independently. For many, it’s been nothing short of transformative.
Former resident and now board member Shen Wilson shares:
“Before I entered Stepping Stone House, my dreams were all about finding a roof over my head. When I came out, my whole life had changed. I’m now a mother of four, with a career and happiness I never thought possible. It’s all because of Stepping Stone House.”
