Sydney, clear your calendars (and maybe your criminal records). The UK’s cult immersive cocktail bar-slash-theatre Alcotraz is breaking out of London and setting up behind bars in Chippendale this October. And honestly? We’ve never been more excited to do time.
The concept: prison, but make it bougie
Alcotraz isn’t just another themed bar with some moody lighting and a gimmick. It’s a full-blown immersive theatrical experience where you, yes you, become part of the storyline. Think Prison Break meets Orange Is The New Black meets a very well-stocked speakeasy.
The minute you arrive, you’re stripped of your civilian identity, handed a bright orange jumpsuit, and given your very own inmate number. From there, it’s all about dodging crooked guards, making allies with shady cellmates, and getting on the right side of the jail’s bootlegging gang who’ll serve you four cocktails (or mocktails), beer, or wine throughout your “sentence.”
If you’re lucky — or charming — enough, you might even score access to the Warden’s office to negotiate your escape or uncover secret areas with your gang.
The cocktails: contraband you want
This isn’t prison wine brewed in a sock. Alcotraz is known for its killer cocktail list designed to break all the rules.
Two highlights:
- Crime of Passion — vodka, passionfruit liqueur, strawberry purée, lime, cranberry, and orange. Sweet, sharp, and dangerously moreish.
- Conspiracy — mezcal, burnt coconut tequila, chocolate butter, pineapple, and a whisper of cinnamon. Basically a flavour heist in a glass.
Why it’s a big deal
Sydney’s event scene has been crying out for fresh, theatrical concepts, and Alcotraz is delivering the goods. Whether you’re planning a quirky date night, a bucks or hens party that isn’t basic, or a team-bonding exercise with a twist, this is the kind of experience that guarantees your group chat will light up for weeks.
Oh, and if it’s someone’s special night? You can stitch them up as a central character in the drama — The Mole, The Janitor, or some other unfortunate role the cast decides. Nothing like seeing your mate forced to help orchestrate an “escape plan” to make the night memorable.

Lisa’s take
I’ve seen a lot of concepts try to do “immersive,” but Alcotraz nails the sweet spot between theatre, cocktails, and a bit of chaos. It’s the kind of night where you start with a drink in your cell, end up hatching escape plans with strangers, and leave with a camera roll full of photos that look like outtakes from a Netflix series.
Sydney, get ready. This is prison you’ll actually want to break into.
