Talk Shop at Caption by Hyatt Is the New Haymarket Hangout We’ve Been Waiting For

There’s something I’m always quietly on the lookout for in Sydney.
Not just another café. Not just another hotel restaurant.
But a place that actually gets how we live.

Talk Shop, tucked inside the newly opened Caption by Hyatt Central Sydney, does exactly that.

Set right in the heart of Haymarket, Talk Shop is an all-day café, bar and community hub designed for connection. The kind of place where you can grab a coffee in the morning, settle in with your laptop for a few hours, meet a friend for lunch, or roll into the evening with a bowl, a burger and a drink in hand. No rules. No rush. Just good energy.

A menu that understands balance

Led by Chef Yammi Cheung, the menu plays with a clever “Healthy vs Indulgent” philosophy — and honestly, it feels very now.

On the indulgent end, you’ve got comfort classics with personality, like the Double-Down Burger with double Black Angus beef, cheddar and caramelised onion, or the Krapow Burger bringing Thai basil and sriracha mayo into the mix.

If you’re leaning lighter, the bowls more than hold their own. The Me So Salmon Bowl with miso-glazed Tasmanian salmon is fresh and satisfying, while the Plain Gainz Bowl with roasted sweet potato, quinoa and green goddess dressing feels like the kind of lunch that keeps you going without the slump.

And then there’s dessert.
Hong Kong-style egg waffles. Matcha soft serve sundaes.
A playful nod to Haymarket’s cultural heartbeat, and very hard to say no to.

Coffee, iced teas and stay-a-while vibes

Mornings start with excellent coffee using local Headlands beans, but Talk Shop really shines in how it adapts to the day. House-made iced teas (which can be spiked, if that’s your vibe), flexible seating and QR-based ordering make it just as comfortable for solo diners and remote workers as it is for groups.

It genuinely feels like a modern third space — somewhere between home and work where you can read a book, take a call, meet someone new or just be.

Art that actually belongs here

One of my favourite things about Talk Shop is how deeply it’s tied to its neighbourhood. The walls are wrapped in bold, contemporary artwork by Sydney artist Chris Yee, whose graphic illustrations celebrate Haymarket’s street culture, history and energy.

You don’t feel like you’re sitting in a generic hotel space. You feel like you’re in Haymarket.

More than a dining venue

Caption by Hyatt’s ethos is about being of the community, not just in it, and Talk Shop really embodies that. From locally sourced produce to upcycled furnishings and zero-waste initiatives, there’s a genuine effort to do hospitality thoughtfully and responsibly.

As Peter Roach from Caption by Hyatt puts it, Talk Shop is about connection — and that really comes through.

The Social101 take

Talk Shop isn’t trying to be loud or flashy. It’s doing something much harder: creating a space people actually want to spend time in.

If you work nearby, live locally, or just find yourself in the CBD and need a place that feels relaxed, welcoming and a little bit inspiring, this is one to bookmark.

Coffee. Food. Art. Conversation.
Talk Shop gets the balance right.
