March is Art Month in Sydney! Art Month Sydney is a city wide festival that celebrates contemporary art and artists through an exciting and varied program of exhibitions, workshops, panel discussions, artist studio visits, tours and more. The festival facilitates access to Sydney’s leading and emerging artists and offers something to suit every art observer’s taste. This year Art Month focuses on Sydney as an Engine of Creativity.
One particular pop-up gallery that is definitely worth a peruse is the Artists Playground at The Galeries on George Street. The Galeries’ retail precinct has been transformed into a pop-up gallery of street art featuring pieces from over 12 emerging local artists. As the first make-shift gallery to be added to the festival’s line-up of established art centres; The Galeries’ curation aims to support emerging contemporary artists, celebrating accessible art in a public forum.
Street artists Apeseven, Bafcat and Numskull, Illustrators Georgia Hill, Maricor/Maricar, and Jess Cruikshank; multidisciplinary artist Nadia Hernandez; object designer Vincent Buret; painter Genevieve Reynolds; sculptor Dion Horstmans and paper engineers Gunjan Aylawdi and Paperform will unleash their unexpected and original sculptures, paper art and paintings with the existing surfaces of the space acting as canvas.
During Art Month The Galeries will also hold Art Therapy workshops each Thursday with reiki master, Irina Gladushchenko and artist Kirana Haag; where participants will contribute to a community art piece. Other must see events include performance art pieces from Mark Titmarsh and Alyssa Choat; Life Drawing classes at the ArtHouse Hotel; and an evening with Instagram sculpture artist Danling Xiao aka Mundane Matters at Books Kinokuniya. Also, if you are squeezing in a bit of shopping while you check out the art and you spend $250 or more during art month you will receive one of three limited edition prints by Maricor/Maricar; and those who Instagram an image of their favourite artwork within The Galeries, using #thegaleriesart will go into the draw to win an original artwork of their choice.
Artists’ Playground at The Galeries’ is the perfect exhibition to check out on your lunch break, before or after work or while you are fitting in a spot of shopping. But if you want a closer look at the artworks and into the world of the artists who created them definitely book yourself into the guided tour with Culture Scouts on Saturday 19th March, 3pm – 5pm. The tour will feature an interesting and knowledgeable run down of each art work, a paper making workshop and refreshments including dumplings & tea at LOTUS, and a drink at The ArtHouse Bar.
