Wine Review: Beresford Estate’s Classic Shiraz 2023

Move over expensive collector bottles and limited release icons. One of the world’s best Shiraz wines now comes with a surprisingly modest $25 price tag.

At the 2026 International Wine Challenge, Beresford Estate’s Classic Shiraz 2023 achieved what few wines ever do. The McLaren Vale drop was awarded an impressive 97 points, earned a Gold Medal and collected four major trophies, including the prestigious International Syrah Trophy, officially ranking it as the top Shiraz among 111 entries from around the globe.

That’s right. Not the best value Shiraz. Not the best Australian Shiraz. The best Shiraz in the world.

Even more remarkable is who it outperformed, surpassing trophy winning wines from some of Australia’s biggest names, including Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon, Tolpuddle Chardonnay and House of Arras Grand Vintage.

So, what does a world champion Shiraz taste like? I recently gave it a good taste and it did not disappoint!

Pour a glass and you’re greeted with an inviting bouquet of juicy blueberry and ripe plum, layered with delicate floral notes, warming spice and a hint of potpourri. It’s perfumed and expressive without feeling overpowering.

On the palate, the Classic Shiraz strikes an impressive balance between richness and freshness. Medium bodied yet generous, it delivers waves of red cherry, plum and sultana, with subtle hints of mint, eucalyptus, dried herbs and Chinese five spice. Bright acidity keeps everything lively, while fine grained tannins provide structure and a smooth, elegant finish.

This is the kind of wine that feels equally at home beside a crackling fire on a cool evening, paired with a leisurely Sunday roast or shared around a long table with friends.

Its versatility at the dinner table is another standout feature. Pair it with slow braised lamb shoulder, beef bourguignon, hearty pasta with rich ragù or an aged cheddar board. Even vegan dishes such as lentil or vegetable stews find a perfect match in its savoury, spice driven profile.

Produced on Beresford Estate’s 70 acre vineyard in McLaren Vale, this vegan friendly Shiraz is a shining example of why South Australia continues to lead the way in world class winemaking. Under the guidance of Head Winemaker Natalie Cleghorn, the focus remains firmly on letting the fruit and vineyard speak for themselves and, in this case, the results speak volumes.

For $25, the Beresford Estate Classic Shiraz 2023 offers extraordinary value and a rare opportunity to taste a genuinely world beating wine without stretching the budget.

If there’s one bottle to add to your shopping list this season, this is it.
