Freshwater Beach on Sydney’s Northern Beaches has long been recognised as the ‘birthplace of surfing in Australia’. Friday 10th March marks the 11 year anniversary of Freshwater & Manly beach being a dedicated World Surf Reserve (WSR), which recognises the historical, cultural, and environmental values of famous surfing beaches. The reserve incorporates Freshwater Beach and all of Manly – from Queenscliff to North Steyne to Manly and Fairy Bower.
To commemorate this anniversary, Surfrider Foundation Australia, Harbord Hotel and Freshwater Brewing Company, are joining forces and putting on a community event to help raise funds for Surfrider Foundation Australia, whose mission is to protect oceans, waves and beaches.
The day kicks-off at 4 pm with a community beach clean-up, organised by Surfrider Foundation Australia, where everyone young and old is invited to help clean-up Freshwater Beach. Post-clean-up the party then starts at Freshwater’s local, Harbord Hotel; a 95-yearold art deco pub and local institution. All are invited post clean-up back to Harbord Hotel for snacks and cracking tunes with special guest Billy Otto performing, all while sinking a few beers by Freshwater Brewing Company. Proceeds from every beer sale of Freshwater Brewing Company at Harbord Hotel, on Friday 10th March will go directly to Surfrider Foundation Australia.
Surfrider Foundation Australia is a registered not-for-profit sea-roots organisation dedicated to the protection of Australia’s waves and beaches through conservation, activism, research, and education.
World Surfing Reserves (WSR) is a program launched in 2009 by the non-governmental organisation Save the Waves Coalition aimed at protecting global surf habitats. The program proactively identifies, designates and enshrines international waves, surf zones and surrounding environments, protecting them from the threat of development.
