Shuk has quickly become a favourite in North Bondi frequented by locals and visitors alike. The café, deli, bakery and restaurant is located in a gorgeous space, that used to be the local milk bar! Shuk offers the freshest produce and dishes that nod its head to Israeli influence, to which it owes its name.
We started dinner with cool refreshing snapper ceviche with mango and pawpaw dressing. This is a perfectly balanced dish, with citrus notes, hints of sweetness from the mango and a slight peppery spice to round it out. I could have eaten a mountain more if my stomach allowed it.
This was followed by king prawns with corn puree, avocado salad and chilli oil – the flavour is unexpectedly smokey, and absolutely delicious.
For main you cant go past the unbelievable tender fall apart beef cheeks with celeriac puree and chimichurri. We also had the roast chicken marinated in Mediterranean spices with labne (a strained yogurt) and slaw. Both dishes are flavour packed but don’t leave you feeling heavy or over indulged. – so of course we had room for desert! Semi-frozen nougat ice-cream with cherries and pistachio and the absolutely special, must have try – earl gray chocolate mousse with strawberries and cocoa gelee. This mousse initially tastes like chocolate, and then the perfume of earl gray blooms up your nose and sits there. The experience is almost like you are not sure if you are tasting earl gray or just smelling it. It is a perfect dessert to share as it is quite rich.
When you hit the beach this summer, escape the tourist trap café’s on Campbell Parade and head to Shuk, whether it is for breakfast , lunch or dinner – you wont be disappointed.
Shuk is located at 2 Mitchell Street, North Bondi
