Mike Rosenberg, aka Passenger, will be performing at the Qantas Credit Union Arena tonight, and here at Sydney Social 101 we can’t wait. Unless you’ve been living under a rock you’ll be aware that 2012 and 2013 were watermark years for the acoustic folk troubadour and included sold out tours in the UK, Europe, Australia and the US, over 6.5 million single sales, No. 1 singles in 21 countries, numerous Top10 album chart positions, 1.2 million album sales and, of course, a whole lot of busking.
The album was recorded with long-term collaborator Chris Vallejo and is the follow-up to All The Little Lights, which was driven by the global smash Let Her Go – the 3rd highest selling single in Australia last year and had, at last count, over 285 million views on YouTube.
Whispers is Passenger’s sixth studio album and its oldest songs date back to before the mayhem began.
The album’s grandest love song is probably Heart’s On Fire, which starts out sparse on finger picked guitar and builds in to a dramatic, passionate, strings-soaked plea to the person you can’t get out of your head. Close your eyes and you can picture it being played by an orchestra at the Sydney Opera House or Royal Albert Hall.
