Glamorous diva Meow Meow returns to Sydney Festival with her sexy and decidedly un-Disney cabaret The Little Mermaid, in a feminist retelling of the Hans Christian Anderson classic of 1837.

Follow her as she tells us of the heartbreak and woe of being a princess looking for her prince, using props, trapeze and a blow-up sex doll. Under the direction of Micheal Kantor and Jethro Woodward, Meow uses her extraordinary voice to spin tales of fantasies gone by, and of the eternal struggle of looking for love. Songwriters include Amanda Palmer, Jkerek Bischoff, Megan Washington, Iain Grandage and Kate Miller-Heidke. It’s hard not to root for our mermaid as she treads water looking for that happy ending.

The show lasts 70 minutes, and leaves the viewer wanting so much more. The magic of the The Little Mermaid comes from not only Meow’s fantastic voice and her ability to fit any genre of music, but of the support of the excellent band and the breaking of the fourth wall. The finale is a sight to behold, and fills the heart with warmth and in some cases, a few tears. Joining the diva onstage is Australia’s very own Prince, Chris Ryan, who recently wowed audiences in Sydney Theatre Company‘s Cyrano de Bergerac and The Present, both alongside veteran actor Richard Roxburgh.

Sydney Festival have performed a true coup d’etat by programming this show, with Meow Meow showing us why she is multi award winning and oh-so-fabulous. Overall, the show is a delightful and charming, fun and funny experience in a spectacular setting.
