Sydney enthusiasts (and I’m guessing that’s you if you’re reading this website), listen up. There’s a new city guide in town and you need to get on your hands on it. Literally – the guide will fit in the palm of your hands.
Launched by City of Sydney, “The Little Book of Sydney Villages” is an insider’s glimpse into – you guessed it – Sydney villages. The guide highlights the best sights to see and the best spots to eat, drink and shop in Sydney’s central, east, west and south suburbs.
We attended the book’s launch on Thursday morning in Sydney’s up-and-coming suburb Rosebery. The event kicked off in furniture and homewares design store Koskela with breakfast treats provided by the neighbouring venue Kitchen By Mike. Amongst the unfinished warehouse setting and colourful products, the Lord Mayor Clover Moore and Peter FitzSimons addressed event attendees.
“The City of Sydney is committed to supporting local business and I am delighted to be launching this new guide that celebrates the huge diversity of businesses in our villages,” said the Lord Mayor.
Co-owner of Koskela, Sasha Titchkosky, spoke about opening her business in a 100-year-old warehouse in an emerging new area and the gamble she faced with the decision.
“That gamble paid off and we have found clientele are increasingly willing to venture out and explore what Sydney’s villages have to offer,” said Sasha.
Next, founder of new (and only!) Sydney distillery Archie Rose, Will Edwards, took to the podium to speak about quitting the corporate world to turn his pipe dream into a reality.
We finished the event with a tour of the distillery located adjacent to Kitchen By Mike. The tour, which is available to the public for a mere $20 per person, included a step-by-step explanation behind the distilling of gin, vodka, and whisky, followed by a tasting.
The unique experiences of the morning in Rosebery reminded us how many other Sydney suburbs we have yet to fully explore and also – how much we truly do love this city.
