Immersive cinema experiences are having a moment right now and Sydney is about to have one of the biggest sci-fi classics brought to life when More Human Than Human: Blade Runner is presented at Goulbourn St car park next month.

Inspired by Ridley Scott’s masterpiece, the rooftop of this concrete inner-city car park will be transformed into an ‘apocalyptic playground’ to create a unique film, food and art event produced by SS101 favourite, Golden Age Cinema and Bar, as part of Art & About Sydney.

Audience members enter into the car park from 6.30pm and make their way through the dystopian architecture to the upper levels where they can interact withvideo, light and sound that will transform the darkness. Large artworks by local artists, including video works curated by 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, and a movie soundscape will add to the surreal ambience.

The experience culminates with a futuristic night market on the rooftop where guests can stroll through mixed food and drinks stalls, eat at the noodle bar, snack on schezuan popcorn and sip on exotic Chinese liquor Moutai cocktails, before settling in for a screening of the recently remastered Blade Runner at 8.30pm. The night market will operate from 6:30pm until 11.30pm, with food and beverage available for purchase. Non-ticket holders are able to attend the night market, however capacity is limited and non-ticket holders will not be permitted access to the cinema.

More Human Than Human promises to immerse guests in the junctions between technology and decay, hope and abandonment, the beautiful and the unnerving. Like Blade Runner, the event hopes to inspire us to ask what it means to be human as we move into the ever approaching “future” imagined by sci-fi filmmakers since the 20th century.

Of course, to get the most out of the experience, you need to put a little into it too so guests are asked to choose whether you are a replicant or a human, and dress accordingly. I’m torn: should I hope for relentless rain to add to the authenticity or is a soggy outdoor car park is an immersive step too far?

The original date for this was last November and it sold out in minutes. However the event had to be moved to February 20 and so there are some extra tickets going on sale this coming Monday 18th January at 9am. Do NOT hang about as they will sell out very fast!
