Have you found Jesus? He’s behind you!! Oh yes, boys and girls, it’s Panto Season! So boo and hiss all you like but it’s time to cheer the Principal Boy, laugh at the Dame and sing along to the words on the screen at a Christmas Pantomime created by a few Triple J staff and talented mates. And what fantastical, farcical fable have they chosen to perform? That’s right, the Nativity!
‘Good Lord! It’s Christmas!’ is an adult re-imagining of the nativity story told through the rapidly disappearing art of pantomime; complete with singing, dancing & audience participation. It’s basically what we now call fan fiction, without necessarily being fans.
The show brings Sydney’s brightest comedy minds together to tear into the plot holes and implausibility of the familiar Christmas story, fleshing out everyone’s favourite Bible characters with exciting, much deserved back stories. From the epic journey of the incredibly stupid Wise Men to the depraved Inn Keeper who’ll sacrifice the world’s saviour for a lousy sum of money. Best of all, seeing it’s basically the story of a Middle Eastern family of refugees fleeing from persecution and being refused shelter at their destination, all proceeds from the evening will be going to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.
Creators Nicholas McDougall (Plonk, The Feed) & Veronica Milsom (Triple J Drive host, Shaun Micallef’s Mad As Hell) met working on ABC TV’s Hungry Beast where they bonded over their unusual love for the art of Christmas pantomime. Together they teamed up with musicians Kristy Lee Peters (triple j House Party host, KLP) and Jim Finn (Art vs Science, Vydamo) who’ve composed an entirely original score.
Veronica Milsom said: “Our aim for the production is to create an event that incorporates the generosity, community & celebration of Christmas by retelling a traditional story and using the proceeds to donate to charity.”
An impressive cast joins Pat Magee (Improv Theatre School) as Joseph; Kristy Lee Peters (triple j House Party host, KLP) as Mary; Veronica Milsom (triple j, ABC TV’s Mad as Hell) as Inn Keeper.
Including: Fran Middleton as General Pants, Miles Bence (SBS2’s The Feed) as King Herod; Will Erimya (ITS Soap Opera) as Wise Man 1; Penny Greenhalgh (ABC TV’s The Checkout) as Wise Man 2; Kate Coates (Improv Theatre School) as The Holy Knight; Al Newstead & Anna O’Bryan (Sydney Fringe’s Al & Anna’s Music Rant) as Pantomime Donkey.
ALL PROCEEDS TO BE DONATED TO ASYLUM SEEKER RESOURCE CENTRE.
