Award-winning Sydney jeweller Matthew Ely talks to Sydney Social 101 about his exquisite new collection of coloured diamonds:
Tell us about the new collection?
The Fleur du Couleur Collection is a mix of international and Australian diamonds, each sourced from around the world based on different areas known for high quality in particular hues. The stones featured in this collection includes grey, black, yellow, orange, pink and green diamonds, making for a stunning blend of rare and sophisticated colours paired with contemporary designs. The collection also features interchangeable designs, studs that turn into classic drop earrings, and jackets that come on and off studs to change the colour and size, for versatile and multi-use pieces for the modern woman.
What is your favourite piece?
The green diamond cocktail ring, it’s such an intricate and bohemian design, focused to bring out the best of a naturally deep green diamond. In my 12 years as a jeweller and gemmologist and it’s very rare that I come across a green diamond in this colour and size of carat weight. This was truly a fantastic stone to design with.
Which designer would you love to collaborate?
It would be great to one day collaborate with another bespoke Australian designer, I’m a big fan of Steven Khalil and J’Aton for their amazing custom creations. I’ve also always admired the lines and aesthetic of Carla Zampatti as well; simple yet modern elegance.
Which designers inspire you?
I definitely look up to the jewellery designer JAR (Joel A. Rosenthal), an American jewellery designer based out of Paris who recently had an exhibition at The MET in New York featuring more than four hundred of his works. His work is critically acclaimed and his craftsmanship pushes the boundaries of modern design, categorized as wearable pieces of art.
The Matthew Ely collection is available now from his boutique in leafy Woollhara. The Fleur du Coleur Collection consists of seven stunning pieces set in yellow, white and rose gold, and white diamond elements.
