There’s another reason to visit Sydney’s inner-east and it’s because of a box. The ‘box’ – a wood-fired pizza oven– was transported from Naples, Italy by boat and now resides in Alexandria’s food emporium Salts Meats Cheese. The venue will use the oven for their newly launched pizzeria, appropriately named, The Pizza Box.

Salts Meats Cheese sits adjacent from The Grounds of Alexandria and The Potting Shed and, like its neighbours, has a sprawling setup. Tri-coloured pastas, olive mixes and exotic salts (who knew Persian blue sea salt even existed?) overflow from its shabby-chic, white shelves. The warehouse was once only a one-stop shop for gourmet Italian but has since added cooking courses, take-away lunch food, and now, the pizzeria to its ever-expanding line-up.

The Pizza Box will serve up a menu of gourmet pizzas all cooked in the oven, including its speciality, ‘The Black Lobster’, a squid ink pizza with lobster tail and cheese toppings. Stefano De Blasi, co-director of Salts Meats Cheese, said the menu was in line with Italy’s current movement towards using more contemporary toppings on pizzas.

“Our customers will still be able to get a traditional margherita but we are also very excited to start experimenting with layering pizza and focaccia with top-quality ingredients and innovative pairings.”

The restaurants also offers a selection of Italian share dishes, including arancini balls, Caprese salad and beef meatballs, desserts that include a ‘Nutella bomb’, and a drinks menu. Its open seven days a week from 6 – 10pm.

Buon appetito!
