Founding Father of Hip-Hop, Grandmaster Flash, will be getting furious and funky this Friday 6th January when he returns to The Soda Factory for an intimate performance.
If you became hooked like I did on the fabulous Baz Luhrman’s series on Netflix, “The Get Down” then you’ll be more than familiar with the legendary Grandmaster Flash‘s early days in the hip-hop world and his rise to musical fame. But it’s not just a great storyline, this pioneer of hip-hop DJ’ing is genuinely credited with having invented cutting, mixing and switching tracks seamlessly between songs. Grandmaster Flash crafted innovations that are considered the bread and butter of DJing today. And now you can witness for yourself the magic of his mixing when the acknowledged King of the Decks is welcomed back at The Soda Factory to spin the wheels of steel this Friday.
The leader of the Furious Five was the first ever hip-hop act to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and to understand why, simply click on the link and check out his seminal “The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel“. Released in 1981, the track is a 7-minute solo showcase of Grandmaster Flash‘s virtuosic turntable skills, combining elements of Blondie’s “Rapture,” Michael Viner’s Incredible Bongo Band’s “Apache,” Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust,” Chic’s “Good Times,” and the group’s own “Freedom.” It is also the first documented appearance of record scratching on a record.
So dig out your old-school attitude, head over to The Soda Factory this Friday and prepare to get down to the one and only, Grandmaster Flash.
