Billy Elliot the Musical in now showing at Sydney Lyric Theatre! Based on the film of the same name, Billy Elliot the Musical is a funny, gritty, heart-warming and feel- good celebration following the journey of a young boy raised in a small British mining town. Set against the backdrop of the 1984/’85 miners’ strike, Billy’s journey takes him out of the boxing ring and into a ballet class where he discovers a passion for dance that inspires his family, the whole community and changes his life forever.
Sharing the celebrated lead role are Omar Abiad (12, from Brisbane), River Mardesic (11, from Melbourne), Wade Neilsen (12, from Newcastle) and Jamie Rogers (12, from Canberra). On opening night, Jamie Rogers played the title role. Jamie effortlessly stole the show with his acting, warmed the audiences hearts with his singing and nailed the often complex choreography.
Other stand out performances come from Justin Smith as Billy’s father who perfectly portrays the struggles of a father accepting his sons new passion for ballet. Kelley Abbey shines as ballet teacher Mrs Wilkinson bringing enormous warmth and compassion to the challenging role. The supporting cast are also fantastic and compliment the lead roles perfectly (even if there were a few nerves on the first night!). James Sonnemann who plays Billy’s cross-dressing pal Michael and Gabrielle Daggar who plays clumsy ballerina Debbie were absolute stand outs from the supporting cast.
Billy Elliot The Musical is uplifting, exciting and powerful. The story, the cast and the music by the legendary Elton John are clear highlights in the show. The juxtaposition in the show between the tough-as-guts working class and the elegance and tutus of the ballerinas was beautifully done and made the show a must-see.
Billy Elliot the Musical premiered in London in 2005 and has since been seen across five continents, winning numerous awards and millions of fans along the way. After winning five Olivier Awards including Best Actor in a Musical for the three Billys and Best Musical, the first international production opened in Sydney in 2007 which garnered eight Helpmann Awards including Best Musical and Best Actor in a Musical for the four boys who shared the role of Billy in 2008.
