Everyone has those mornings when they wake up and decide they don’t want to go to work that day. For the lucky, those mornings are rare. For the unlucky, those mornings happen five days a week.
But for women like Indah, those moments never happened. For her, work – and those dreading mornings – were privileges she hadn’t yet been granted. Indah is an Indonesian mother of three who, after ending a relationship, found herself searching for full-time work in Australia. It was an uphill battle – Indah remained unemployed and eventually homeless.
Enter charity Dress for Success.
Indah attended one of the charity’s workshops on learning how to dress for an interview. From there, she completed the rest of the programs. The charity taught her to how to write a CV, dress in work-appropriate clothes, and manage her money. Now she is working as an Assistant in Nursing and studying full-time for a Bachelor of Nursing.
Indah told her story in front of the crowd gathered at Dress for Success’s ‘100 Years of Power Dressing’ event last week in Sydney. The event was held at The Sky Lobby in Westfield Shopping Centre and featured a runway show with models, presenters, actresses and journalists wearing selected garments from the Darnell Collection.
Actress Marta Dusseldorp, presenter Suzie Mack and Miss University Australia 2014 winner Tegan Martin wore clothing from the 1910s all the way through to the 2000s. Charlotte Smith, the collection’s owner, talked the audience through each look explaining the story behind how the garment was sourced.
