Perennial Sydney favourite Bavarian Bier Cafe has always been the go-to for a hearty and authentic German meal and a giant stein of imported German beer-y goodness. So it got us pretty excited when they announced that not only would they be revamping the existing venues’ already welcoming interior, but also pairing the launch of their own haus-brewed craft beer range with delicious new additions to the menu.
Having visited many a German beer house in my travels abroad, a feeling of familiarity at the Bavarian Bier Cafe in Bondi meant that not only had the renovations captured the essence of everything there is to love about German culture, but they had also somehow made it cooler. The moody yet modern lighting, old-school beer barrel tables, fun artwork covering the walls and even a foozball table all come together to create a relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere perfect for everything from Friday night drinks to a casual meal with the family.
In what can only be described as a beer lovers heaven, the craft beer range are all brewed in Australia using authentic Bavarian recipes and over 500 years of Bavarian brewing traditions. The new range consists of Munich Lager, Butcher’s Pride Pale Ale, (definitely a favourite!) a wheat and barley blend called Hop Dock and a low-carb offering suitably called Blonde Moment. If you’re like me and find it difficult to choose just one, the Crafty Flight gives you a 150mL sampling of all four and is the perfect way to give your taste buds the full craft beer experience!
So how do you make a table full of ice-cold craft beers even better? Pair them up with an enticing range of Bavarian-inspired burgers and hotdogs, all with sensational haus-made sauces and condiments designed to compliment and enhance the new beer range.
Basically jumping off the menu at us was The Kanzler – (I’m not actually sure if you could fit any more of my favourite ingredients into a single burger?) Consisting of a soft brioche bun, a grilled haus-blend burger patty, caramelised onion, creamy japanese mayo, melty swiss cheese, a rib roast jus and tangy horseradish, it barely hit the sides and would certainly stand up to lofty comparisons with the top burgers in Sydney.
If you’re after a killer combination to try, the Chillin’ Wagyu Dog, a wagyu chilli beef sausage with tangy BBQ sauce, shredded cheddar and subtle yet spicy pickled jalepenos is a match made in heaven with the Butcher’s Pride Pale Ale, with the summery citrus notes perfectly offsetting the chili kick. The Perfect Pairings menu is made all the more enticing when you can pick up your fave food and craft beer combo for only $15!
As if there weren’t enough welcome additions to the menu already, diners can unleash their own inventive streak and build their own salad. The combinations are vast, with options including choosing your own leaves, picking a protein, selecting cheeses, adding a sprinkling of fruits, nuts and seeds along with a wide variety of sauces and dressings. Have it in either a bowl or a wrap, and you’ve got yourself either a nutritious and delicious side to share among friends or a meal all to yourself!
With eight locations all over Sydney and plenty of warm weather still on the way, it’s the perfect time to round up a group of friends and experience some authentic German craft beer, exciting Bavarian-inspired food and a good night out that’s a little different to what you might expect!
