This week Riverside Theatres has launched its 2016 Season and it’s a cracker! Their 15 world-class productions will have you travelling the world from your comfortable riverside seating. Robert Love, Director of Riverside Theatres, has managed to bring together a collection of performances that will have you in laughing, crying and sitting with baited breath. He’s said “the 2016 program has a diverse offering for all ages, backgrounds and tastes”.
The epic world journey starts at South Australia’s Lake Eyre with Terrain, a double Helpmann Award winner. Audiences are engaged in a journey through drought and deluge where nature delivers in abundance, promising everything but guarantees nothing. Choreographed by Frances Rings and composed by David Page with Set Designer Jacob Nash, the award-winning Aboriginal artists have created a powerful story inspired by Australia’s beautiful Lake Eyre.
Skip across the globe to York County, UK for a striking adaptation of Wuthering Heights produced by Shake & Stir Theatre Co and the Queensland Performing Arts Centre. Then cross the Channel for Paris France for a retelling of Moliere’s Les Femmes Savantes. His work has been transformed by Justin Fleming and brought to Sydney for this silly and sassy production of the bumpy road of sweet, guileless love, directed by Lee Lewis.
In Padua, Italy Shakespeare set the scene for his classic tale of love, disharmony, passion, humour and pain in this reimagining of The Taming of the Shrew directed by Damien Ryan, presented by renowned Sydney based theatre company, Sport for Jove.
On to New York, USA, as Riverside Theatre presents a Sydney Theatre Company Production of Disgraced by Ayad Akhtar. Faith, lies, aspirations and what happens when corporate lawyer Amir Kapoor (Sachin Joab) and his artist wife Emily host their not so quiet dinner party. Disgraced has won the 2015 Pulitzer Price for Drama, 2013 Obie Award, nominated for the 2015 Tony Award for best play and won the 2012 Joseph Jefferson Award for New York Play or Musical, definitely not one to be missed.
Audiences can stumble back home for the true story of Japanese-Australian photographer, entrepreneur and inventor, Yasukichi Murakami, set in the early 1900s at the Northern Territories. Yasukichi Murakami: Through A Distant Lens is written by Mayu Kanamori and directed by Malcolm Blaylock.
