The world-renowned Russian National Ballet performed the full-length classical Swan Lake ballet at the stately Enmore Theatre, Newtown, as part of their 2015 tour of Australia and New Zealand. The Sydney leg was part of an epic tour that will cross two continents ,reaching 45 cities and towns from August till December and showcases Swan Lake as well as Sleeping Beauty.

National Russian Ballet performing Swan LakeArtistic Director, Evgeny Amosov, and Company Coach, Evgenya Rytova, have teamed together to choreograph and stage this moving adaptation of Swan Lake by the Russian National Ballet Theatre. With such a demanding tour schedule for the troop of 50+ dancers, it’s no wonder there were a few quirks with lighting and possibly the dimensions of the Enmore’s stage.

That did not deter from what was a beautiful performance, which clearly showed why this ballet is still a favourite around the world. The striking traditional swan costuming had an elegance that was reflected through the dancers’ movements. The ladies and gentlemen of the court sported vibrant period costumes as they danced their pieces for each act. But as always, the true stars were the lovers Princess Odette and Prince Siegfried. They mirrored each other’s strong technique and poise, complementing their blossoming romance on stage.
