Who can resist a cute kitten or puppy? RSPCA NSW are aiming to Clear the Shelter this weekend with $29 adoption fees state-wide for all animals great and small, regardless of age or species, in an attempt to find new homes for the hundreds of animals in care across the state. So if you’ve seriously considered adopting a furry (scaly/feathery etc) friend, then maybe now is the time.

“It’s all about finding forever homes for all our animals and giving that extra incentive for people looking for a new pet a good reason to adopt, instead of shop through somewhere like Gumtree or backyard breeders,” comments RSPCA NSW Head of Animal Care Services Brendon Neilly.

A menagerie of animals are looking for their forever homes, with puppies, kittens, adult cats and dogs, pocket pets such as rabbits and guinea pigs, even livestock such as goats, Shetland ponies, pigs and ducks all available for adoption on the weekend.

Last year the RSPCA NSW saw 583 animals rehomed during Clear the Shelter, which was 81% of the animals available for adoption. This year they are aiming to have every single animal find their new ‘furever’ home.

RSPCA NSW currently have 596 animals available state-wide, some having spent over 450 days in our care. So there really is no excuse to go and shop for a ‘new’ pet.

Normal adoption procedures apply so the $29 fee includes desexing and microchipping, vaccinations, veterinary checks and behavioural procedures, as well as a one-on-one with prospective new adoptive parents, to ensure all the animals go to great homes. That is an incredible bargain! RSPCA NSW is also committing to making follow-up contact with each new adoptive family at three and six months.

“We have monitored this promotion carefully and the evidence shows that there is no higher return rate whatsoever, and no negative impacts for the animal’s welfare. The majority of people are already looking at adopting a pet, and this special adoption drive helps them make that decision to adopt, not shop,” concludes Neilly.
