Sydneysiders have raised a glass to their favourite watering holes at the 2017 Time Out Sydney Bar Awards, held on Sunday afternoon at the Sky Terrace at The Star.

The awards, hosted by comedian Rhys Nicholson, were attended by over 600 readers and bar industry luminaries. There were 12 awards up for grabs including the Hot Talent Award, voted on by an industry panel, and People’s Choice chosen by Time Out readers.

The top gong of Bar of the Year went to Oxford Street cocktail bar, This Must Be The Place, which also took out Best Cocktail Bar. Time Out’s National Food and Drink Editor, Emily Lloyd-Tait, explained: “This bar brought something new and dynamic to Sydney’s bar scene when they launched their Spritz menu, and it’s that kind of boundary pushing that keeps us going back there.”

Despite all the fun and frolics Time Out CEO, Michael Rodrigues, also shared a serious message on issues the industry has been facing in recent years. “It’s been difficult to watch good businesses suffer the last couple of years, but we applaud and support the tireless spirit of the bar community in battling the challenges created by the lockouts,” he said. “Barry O’Farrell created a problem that Mike (Baird) inherited and didn’t know what to do with. Will Gladys do better? We look forward to continuing the dialogue with the Berejiklian administration to make Sydney late again.”
