When a bandwagon is worth jumping on us Sydneysiders don’t do things by halves. Malbec may be Argentina’s most famous import, but we have decided to dedicate a whole day in celebration of the fine red stuff.

Having become a cult hit in Melbourne over the past three years, Gauchito Gil’s Malbec World Day is tango dancing all the way to Sydney for the first time on Saturday, April 23.

Malbec World Day – unsurprisingly – has traditionally been dominated by Argentina (given the country boasts the largest Malbec production area in the world).

The team behind Bottle Shop Concepts is now taking on Argentina to bring you not only the biggest Malbec-dedicated events in the Australia, but also one of the first events of the Malbec World Day celebration globally. The tour kicks off in Melbourne on Sunday April 17 (Malbec World Day), before its Sydney debut the following week.

The full-bodied red was introduced to the region in 19th century, and has since become the country’s most famed varietal. With more and more award winning examples now in Australia, we are taking the lead from Gauchito Gil-  the Argentinean equivalent to Robin Hood – and ‘stealing’ some of the limelight by showcasing over 80 styles from both countries.

Guests are encouraged to join in the live tango dancing in both Sydney and Melbourne. Barbeque kings, Porteño, will be serving up a traditional Argentinian feast including empanadas for the Sydneysiders. Melbournites will be treated to delicious empanadas from some of Melbourne’s best restaurants including Piqueos, Gertrude St Enoteca, The Mill House, El Alamo, and Casa Ciucco. Yarra Valley Dairy will also be on hand serving up cheese. The beer of choice will be Argentina’s favourite beer, Quilmes.

Malbec producers on board include Argentina’s Archavel Ferrer, Jed, Mendel Wines, Rutini, as well as Australia’s Matchbox Wines, Bremerton, Ferngrove and Chalmers ‘Arturo’ to name just a few.

Tickets are $50 per person, includes a Plumm REDa wine glass (valued at $30) and all the wines on tasting.
