Most people who know me understand that good Italian food is well and truly the way to my heart, which is why I’m currently enamored with The Sawmill, a buzzing local eatery tucked away in West Pymble dishing up rustic Italian food with a twist.

Operating as a café by day and a traditional Italian eatery with its very own cocktail bar by night, The Sawmill’s versatility and focus on delicious regional Italian cuisine has seen it quickly become a favorite of locals and foodies alike.

The venue itself is a blend of tradition and modern café dining, with the design features paying homage to the area’s historic role in timber production, while the large fully retractable windows and bench seating along the entire front of the building create a laid back vibe perfect for chilling out on a Summer’s day.

An enticing range of breakfast faves make choosing what to go for a tough ask, and you may find yourself umm-ing and ahh-ing while deciding between the tasty haloumi stack, yummy zucchini and corn fritters with poached eggs, or if you’re feeling naughty, the indulgent pancakes with salted caramel gelato.

Head Chef Ruben Castellaz, formerly of the iconic Fratelli Fresh, works his magic at night with a mouthwatering selection of Italian fare including antipasto, fresh homemade pasta and some of the best wood-fired pizza you’ll find anywhere in Sydney, all using the finest seasonal ingredients.

If that wasn’t enough, the dessert menu is pretty much something dreams are made of (my dreams anyway), with seriously good tiramisu, cannoli, tarts, cakes, meringues and anything else you can think of creating a perfect end to the evening paired with a classic cocktail, wine or house-roasted coffee.  Head pastry chef Rocco is also a trained opera singer, so if you ask him nicely you might even be treated to a few bars like we were!

If you’re a fan of authentic Italian food in a relaxed and modern setting, The Sawmill has a little something for everyone.  In an area not necessarily known for good food, The Sawmill stands out as one of the best eateries around and is well worth a visit for locals and food lovers alike!
