In my ideal realm of perfect cinema viewing, Iggy Pop and Quintin Taratino would have been sat with me. That way, I would have the pleasure of knowing that afterwards I could sit for hours discussing the soundtrack composed by Jonny Greenwood, and over a series of different wines, the intricate depth of each character.

This American crime comedy drama adapted for screen by Paul Thomas Anderson is unlikely to be enjoyed by those unfavourable to a complicated plot. Nor by those who crave a final resolution before the lights come up. To truly enjoy this, I believe the viewer needs to relinquish the habit of trying to guess what’s going on and what’s coming and just enjoy the psychedelic 60s trip. You won’t be able to guess what’s coming anyway – unless of course you have read Thomas Pynchon’s novel, which I had not.

This isn’t a traditional Hollywood number – the protagonist Doc Sportello is not your traditional hero. This movie is loaded with sub-plots, and without a collection of talented actors who are able to effortlessly express these extended human stories without words, the movie would be a flop. The scene begins with Shasta Fay Hepworth (Katherine Waterston) explaining to her spliff smoking ex and detective Larry ‘Doc’ Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix): ‘I need your help Doc’. Turns out she does, and there may be a few others requiring it along the way too. The most important matter to hand is whether he is able to give it, to anyone; thoroughly questionable throughout the story but equally part of the characters charm.

Amidst the mystery, there are also a gratifying quantity of occasions to really have a good laugh out loud. Something I haven’t done since Wolf of Wall Street.

If you’re looking for an action packed blockbuster, a title with a clear beginning, middle and end, don’t bother. If you are looking to enjoy some exceptional acting, having a good old giggle, and to be confused for at least half of the film, if not 99% of it, get yourself a ticket to a cinema viewing and start ordering the DVD for your collection. I know I am.
