Short Film Festival Tropfest makes a Triumphant Return thanks to Last Minute Funding

Tropfest, the long-running popular short film festival will return to Sydney on Sunday 14 February. The venue is Centennial Parklands and entry, as usual, will be free.

The festival, which was scheduled to take place this December, was cancelled at the last minute due to a financial issue. A large and vocal outpouring of support for the free festival followed after its cancellation with Sydneysiders very disappointed at the omission from their summer calendar and amazed at how such a large and internationally recognised event could fall on hard times. So it was a great relief all round when the organisers announced last week that Tropfest has been saved! The film festival will return early next year after financial help from insurance company CGU.

CEO of the company, Ben Bessell says that :

“Supporting this fantastic cultural event is about creating a renewed opportunity for Tropfest and all those small businesses associated with the event to continue to thrive and get some business done”

The festival has been attended by more than 1.6 million people since 1993 when it was founded by John Polson:

“Thanks to the support given by CGU Insurance, we’re now able to restore Tropfest for the filmmakers whose work was put on hold, for our fans and of course for the suppliers and partners who all give so much to make the world’s largest short film festival a reality.”

Films this year include animation, drama and comedy, with some famous names starring, such as Natalie Bassingthwaite who is known for her role in the soap opera Neighbours.

The festival will also include Trop Jr which will highlight the talents of film makers under 15 years old, presented by the Australian Children’s Television Foundation (ACTF). This is the largest kids film festival in the world and will present work from new entrants as well as some who have presented before.

The films will also be showing free-to-air on SBS 2 from 9pm on Sunday 14 February.
